In Africa, Childless marriages can make some women pursue bizarre options to have children.

A Ugandan woman in her 40s was recently arrested by police for going an extra mile to fake a pregnancy to sustain her marriage which was being torn apart by her inability to have a baby. The woman who incidentally had already 4 children in a string of earlier relationships wanted to impress his naïve hubby jus how fertile she still was. The man wanted a baby badly but the woman probably knew she would never have one. She accordingly put layers of rags around her belly and kept it growing every month for six long months..

By the time she was supposedly six months pregnant, she connived with a nurse at the referral Hospital in Kampala and paid her to get a six month old foetus to corroborate her pregnancy claims. Police have since ascertained that she paid about $130 to make available the foetus she badly needed.

As soon as the foetus was procured, the woman told her husband that she was feeling some birth pangs and needed to go to hospital. At the Hospital, she approached the nurse and was quickly given the dead foetus and thereafter, she started wailing uncontrollably that she had had a miscarriage. Hr crying in the hospital however,  attracted the Doctors who queried her claims when it became clear that she had not been seen by any Doctor or nurse and that there were no  records about her miscarriage any where.

When the husband showed up on hearing the bad news, he insisted that the Doctors examine his wife thoroughly before he takes her home. The woman did not want to hear this and quickly disappeared. That was when the husband tipped off police who later arrested her and forcibly subjected her to a medical examination which confirmed that she had never been pregnant at all. After serious interrogation, it was found out the she had connived with a nurse at the same hospital to fake a pregnancy. The Nurse is now being suspected of having either stolen foetus or illegally induced an abortion. Both the Nurse and the woman are in police custody as investigations continue. They are due to be charged and presented to court.
