What happens when a man defies the saying “you can’t fight city hall” by lugging his neglected garbage right up to the very door?

What happens when a fed up citizen takes recycling collection into his own hands and carts about eight pounds of cardboard right up to the steps of City Hall? Read his story; it’s not recycled from anywhere.

It is sometimes said that one man’s meat is another’s poison, but has anyone ever heard of converting one man’s trash into a town hall displeasure? In Farmingdale, New York, this is exactly what happened when resident, Tom Mirabelli, aged 61, got fed up with the local trash collectors who missed two scheduled pickups over a thre week period of time.

He tried to get rid of the cardboard the right way, but after a call to the town waste management department and a dispute with a trash collector who refused to take it, he carted the cardboard to Brookhaven Town Hall. That action incurred charges of littering and obstructing a right of way, which according to Mirabelli, he defiantly tore up in front of some officials who more likely than not regretted removing their masks.

Mirabelli said of his actions:

“In retrospect, I shouldn’t have done it. I admit I was wrong for putting the garbage on their steps, but I was frustrated.”

Was he right or wrong?
