9,000 plants with a street value of $1,200 per plant found growing in Cherokee County, Georgia.
With all the diligence of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office marijuana still runs rampant in Waleska. The wooded mountains and fields where only a few hunters tred make it easy for growers to hide their plants among the trees and low growth. Most hunters or hikers would not report it even if they recognized the plant, who knows what neighbor it belongs to and you wouldn’t want your house burned down or your family car forced off the road with your kids in it.
In this raid, more than 9.000 knee high marijuana plants with a street value of $1,200 a plant were pulled from the deeply wooded area in Waleska. It was the largest seizure of marijuana plants in the county’s history according to the sheriff’s spokesman, Sgt.Jay Baker. The plants were growing among pine trees in the Waleska area on property leased by the Shoal Creek Hunting Club, he said.” No suspects have been arrested, and no one in the club is a suspect.”
A tip to the Cherokee Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad in April set off the investigation. The plants were just a few inches tall when investigators found them.
I wonder why they were not pulled at the time they were found. Why wait until 9,000 marijuana plants were knee high and worth $1,200 each before destroying them?
Back in the eighties Sam Nunn wanted to pass a bill to allow a chemical to be sprayed on the mountains and wooded areas to kill the undergrowth and therefore the marijuana that might be growing there. I, for one wrote a strong letter of protest. I had much rather have marijuana growing in our forest and still have a forest. I would not poison our forests and streams to try to destroy marijuana or any other plant. All of our families as children and adults have walked the mountain trails and I hope all generations will be able to do so. It’s our job and responsibility to see those future generations will have the same privilege of hiking the woodlands and fishing the streams that we have had. Marijuana or no marijuana.

Some good points of view expressed here.
No telling how many marijuana plants are growing in the U.S. un-noticed. Great article!
Very informative and a bit of a surprise! Nice article.
I agree with you, we must think of future generations.
Well Done. This sort of thing is a MAJOR problem up here in Alaska, just thing of all the people living just outside the city limits, or in the literal boonies.
Great Job
Kathy
Nice reporting. To answer your question about why they waited, they were probably trying to figure out who planted them and who was coming to harvest them, so they would know whom to charge.
Thank all of you for your interest and your comments. I appreciate it so much.
And Joe, you are absolutely right. I am just surprised the growers didn’t slip in and harvest but I’m sure they knew the Officers were watching. That’s a lot of money at 1200 dollars a plant.
An eye opening article, we have had similar problems here in NZ.
A nice piece of reporting, Ruby. Very informative.
Wonderfully written.
nice article,
same problem here in our country, hope something can be done to put an end to this
Great reporting,We have a little of the same thing here but we don’t hear much about it.
Tt seems this is a problem all over,so previlent it will always be with us. I do know birds drop the seeds and it can spring up anywhere, though most of it is not by accident. Everyone take care.
I didn’t know we still had that much growing.
I see it nearly every time I go hunting. I can’t see as it hurts anybody.
free the weed!!! legalization not criminalization..and folks i dont even smoke…maybe this new administration will do something right before they are voted out of office in 2012
Great story, Ruby. I like the forests and streams, too. There’s enough pollution in them already without crazy schemes like that.
