The 38th mission to mars is a success as Phoenix touches down to look for life.
NASA’s 38th mission to Mars is a success. The Phoenix Lander touched down on the Mars frozen Tundra at 5:00 P.M. on May 25th. Nervous scientists waiting with baited breath for a seven minute eternity as the Lander descended the Martian atmosphere to finally reach its destination. Phoenix now joins the history books along with the Viking, Pathfinder and Mars rovers.
But Phoenix has a different mission, unlike its two predecessors; phoenix will search for life on the frozen surface. Much like the Viking Lander, Phoenix will scoop a sample of the Martian soil to detect for any sign of extra terrestrial life. However Phoenix will be able to take a scoop up to a depth of 20 inches which will then analysis the soil, to look for living microbes. If successful the age old question will be answered that life exists beyond our planet.
This could be an historic occasion, Mars has always been a source of curiosity since it is the only planet considered hospitable (if you can call it that by our standards) to support certain types of life. Evidence has shown that Mars at one time may have been much more Earth-like then it is now. Complete with surface water and a blue skies. But something happened and the planet became a desert wasteland.
This will be something to see over the next few days and finally the question could be answered that there is life out there.
