46 year old, Cassandra Palmer tried to “the right thing” to prevent herself from drink driving, ended up arrested by the Wellington police. Palmer claimed to have drunk a bottle of wine to soothe the event of a family tragedy in her parked car, 27th of April. Aware that she’d have to drive home, she went to the local police station, handed in her keys and asked to call her husband. In return, the police asked for a blood test, that the woman refused.

As for the phone call, instead Cassandra Palmer ended spending her evening in a cell. Mrs Palmer, who had never been arrested before in her life, said the experience had made her loose faith in the police.

“I walked in for help and handed over my keys. I was saying I had no money, no cell phone and shouldn’t drive home and I was pounced on. It was really traumatic,” she said.

“I got myself into a silly situation but I would have liked to get out of it with their help instead of being persecuted,” the woman added.

Sergeant Corey Watts felt no pity and just simply did his job. He said,” She said she had been drinking wine and wanted to drink more.”

Mrs Palmer was not arrested for drink driving, but failure to take a blood test when asked to by Sergeant Corey Watts.

“I’ve done nothing wrong!” she cried.

“I sympathised with her situation entirely because she had done the right thing in coming in,” Mr Watts said. “But we were duty-bound to carry out a procedure based on our belief at the time.”
