Seriously? A Camel Beauty Pageant?

Camels, not exactly the kind of animals you might think the word beautiful applies to.

In Abu Dhabi though there is a well known annual event, what is it?

A camel beauty Pageant, now when I first heard this I thought surely it was a joke.

It isn’t, it is part of a bigger festival event.

The camel, renown for its resilience and natural ability to tolerate extreme heat and other desert elements is a prize possession in the Middle East. Many well respected men of ancient times owned these desert taxis, they can go great distances and many weeks without water or food.

Ironically these animals are not very nice, thy are known to have horrendous tempers.

Which begs the question, how does one get a camel to be still long enough to be in a pageant?

It is a good question with a very simple answer, it takes great
skill and reflexes to handle these animals. I have heard many derogatory things said of people who ride these animals, but truthfully despite the camel’s not so wonderful appearance, these animals are quite majestic and indeed

have earned their nickname as “Tanks of the Desert.”

Camels are unique among the animals in the fact that they not only tolerate and survive desert climates, but they actually thrive!

The next time you think of camels, don’t just think of them as desert cattle,

there is far more to them than just a passing glance can see.
