Elton John, notorious singer/songwriter and his husband, filmmaker David Furnish, are the proud new parents of Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John. Zachary was delivered by an unnamed surrogate and was adopted by John and Furnish yesterday (12-27-10). Zachary was a Christmas present for the happy couple, born on Christmas day.
Elton John has tried to adopt a child in the past, an HIV-positive child from the Ukraine. John has long been a supporter of the HIV cause. However, he was turned down because he was a gay, married male and because the government deemed him too old to raise a child. At age 63, this does pose a serious question. Furnish is 48. Will they have the energy required to parent a toddler and later, a teenager? This is also John’s first child, so he has a lot to learn!! He does have some experience being the godfather to several famous tikes (the Beckham boys, Sean Lennon among some others).
In the past, the British native attempted to adopt an HIV-positive child from the Ukraine with Furnish, but was forbidden to by government officials due to both John’s age and marital status.

Its like saying i have everything i need money and fame i just dont have a human. Purely selfish on their part.
This makes me ponder upon the effect on the child. Is it really fair on him?
I guess we should consider giving them a chance to be a parent since they have been always wanting it. Who knows,they might turn into best parents.
I wish them both a lot of luck. Bringing up children is hard work, but there’s a lot of love out there and that’s all a child really asks for. I’m sure they’ve got lots to give.
I am kind of mixed on this. First, there is the entire adoptive parent aspect. Very impressive when someone adopts and I, as an adoptive father, always applaud the giving heart. However, sometimes, to me atleast, it seems that celebrity adoption are akin to ownership. It is a way to enhance their public image. I guess it will take a while to see whether or not this is fthe former or the latter.

I don’t personally agree with it, not because of their sexuality, but because of their ages, particularly Elton John. It is not fair on the baby in my opinion.
Being 58 I cannot be too critical of him. However, he IS a Watford soccer club supporter lol.
To save on the Google: Watford FC have NOT spent many years in the top flight (in their history) and only reached the FA Cup Final once. It would be CRUEL for a kid to have to watch them!
Yes, I do think he’s a bit old to be a parent. I mean he’ll be 81 when the kid turns 18. Too much chance of him becoming physically unfit or even dying before then.
I wonder how the child would be raised
I am sure this will confuse the baby as why he has two daddies.

I think it is great! The couple clearly want a child quite badly and feel it is the right time. Who are we to decide whether a parent is too old, gay or married or not as long as the child is deeply loved and brought up properly. There are many many unfit young, hetrosexual and married parents who are abusing their children by their irresponsible behaviour. Give them a chance – it doesn’t matter if Elton doesn’t see his child beyond 20 as long as the short time he spends with him is quality. I think parents who want children badly make better parents than some people who are popping them out like peas just to get a council house!!
I am old fashioned, so ‘his husband’ still doesn’t do it for me. Just the same, they can spare the kid a lot of grief and call him ZJ for short.
