Does our goverment have anything to do with why we haven’t been getting anywhere with the Eurovision?
How would you describe the Eurovision song contest? As a fair voted, friendly contest were participants sing and dance their hearts out to make their country proud? Or just a mass political voting scheme that results in the same countries being placed in the top 10 year after year?
Has anyone ever noticed that since the Labour Party have been elected we haven’t even so much as come close to gaining a good Eurovision place 95% of the time. Nil points to Jemini with “Cry Baby” in 2003 and not much better since. The last time the United Kingdom won was 1997, the closest to winning since was in 1998 and 2002.
Here are the United Kingdom result for the last 10 years.
2008 Even If > Andy Abraham > scoring 14 points finishing 24th
2007 Flying the Flag (For You) > Scooch > scoring 19 points finishing 22nd
2006 Teenage life > Daz Sampson > scoring 25 points finishing 19th
2005 Touch My Fire > Javine > scoring 18 points finishing 22nd
2004 Hold On To Our Love > James Fox > scoring 29 points finishing 16th
2003 Cry Baby > Jemini > scoring 0 points finishing 26th
2002 Come Back > Jessica Garlick > scoring 111 points finishing 3rd
2001 No Dream Impossible > Lindsay D > scoring 28 points finishing 15th
2000 Don’t Play That Song Again > Nikki French > scoring 28 points finishing 16th
1999 Say It Again > Precious > scoring 38 points finishing 12th
1998 Where are you? > Imaani > scoring 166 points finishing 2nd
For the past six years or so the Eurovision results show that countries vote for their neighbours and or friends. Seeing as we have just about criticised and dis-engaged from every country in Europe I set to stand a solid ground and say that there is no hope left for the United Kingdom in winning another contest.
Terry Wogan proves that there is no hope for the United Kingdom by announcing on live TV that he may not return to commentate for us in next years Eurovision. If we cannot get any were and cannot listen to Terry Wogan with his harsh comments, then what is the point of entering anymore?
So is the Eurovision a song contest or just a European political debate? Will there ever be hope for the UK again?
Who knows?
