Who decides your name when you get engaged and are about to get married?
It is amazing that a woman so famous in New York, and all around the world, announced her engagement in a simple way. On Thursday, July 16, Ivanka Trump wrote on Twitter “I got engage last night…”. I am sure she had her reasons for announcing her engagement on Twitter. But I have to say that I was not expecting the news in such a simple way.
I then remember one indirect question someone asked me when I got engaged. A friend said to me “I am so happy for you. Now, your new name is going to be…”. She waited for me to answer. I never really thought about it. So I did not know exactly what to say. Finally, I said my name, my family’s last name and my fiance’s last name. Then I said to her, “I am Hispanic. This is how we do it where I come from. My fiance has no problem about it”. The truth is, I never discussed this issue with him before, but when I did, he had no problem with my decision.
Many people thought that I was crazy because I would have a really long name. My name and last name were already long, so I did not mind adding eight extra letters to it. I was not going to give up my last name. My family is not famous and we do not have money. The reason for me keeping my last name is that my last name is a connection I have with my siblings, and this connection is important to me.
At this time we have not heard if Ivanka will be Ivanka Trump, Ivanka Kushner or Ivanka Trump-Kushner. This is not an easy decision to make when you get engaged and you are about to get married. Ivanka probably will have to take in consideration her family’s opinion on this matter and her fiance’s feelings. She will probably think about how her new name is going to sound.
People say every little girl dreams with a handsome prince. Maybe Ivanka had this dream. I wish her the best. I also hope that when she thinks about her prince and this new chapter in the story of her life, she makes a smart decision.
