Mel Gibson and his wife of 28 years, Robyn Gibson will be divorcing.  Robyn’s petition for divorce was signed on Thursday April 9, 2009 and was filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court Monday morning.  She is claiming irreconcilable differences as grounds for the divorce.

Even though their sparation date is file as “to be determined,” it is thought that they may have been separated for up to three years now.  In Mel’s counter-petition their separation date is specified as August 26, 2006.  If you remember the headlines from the summer of ‘06 you will recall that Mel Gibson was arrested and charged with a DUI just about one month prior.  This event is seen as the beginning of the end for Mel and Robyn Gibson.

Mel Gibson’s net worth was recently estimated to be upwards of $900 million dollars.  Much of this wealth is up for dispute.  Being married in 1980 and not very famous or wealthy at that time, no prenuptial agreement was made.  His wife is seeking property assets, “miscellaneous jewelry,” joint physical and legal custody of their youngest son, Tom, as well as spousal support.  Out of their seven children, Tom, who is 10 years old, is the only minor.

As would be expected, the rumors are rolling.  It is said that Mel has been having an affair but, in a joint statement issued through their publicist, Alan Nierob, they said, “Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so.”

Mel and Robyn Gibson would have us think they they have simply grown apart.  Many believe this to actually be the case.  After 28 years of marriage, this is a successful marriage.  Most average marriages don’t last that long especially Hollywood marriages.
