Michael Jackson’s “This is It” Earns $101 Million

“This Is It” movie depicting Michael Jackson’s practice sessions in the final weeks before his death, hits the market last week. Sony who purchased the rights to the material have already earned $40 million above the $60 million they paid to Michael Jackson’s Estate.
“This Is It” Michael Jackson’s movie launched five days ago, has earned $101 million worldwide. The movie which was scheduled to run for two weeks is being extended by Sony, who purchased the rights to the material. The movie features Jackson in practice performances in June 2009, just weeks ahead of his July 13th concerts in London. However, his untimely death on June 25th resulted in the cancellation of the concerts.
According to Fox News, in the US, the film was the number 1 Halloween movie at the Box Office, earning $21.3 million over the weekend. Since “This It Is” was released, it has earned $32.5 million in the United States, $10.4 in Japan, $6.3 million in Germany, $5.8 million in France, and $3.2 million in China, a total of just over $68 million. In Great Britain, where Jackson was scheduled to perform in 50 concerts before his untimely death, the movie has so far earned $7.6 million.
“This is It” was only scheduled to run for two weeks in the United States. However based on the success, Sony has decided to extend it until Thanksgiving weekend in November. On the overseas market, it will be extended on a country by country basis, running one to three additional weeks.
It has been reported by Fox News, that Sony who paid $60 million for the Jackson’s rehearsal footage, recouped that amount in five days of releasing the movie. It has played in 3481 theatres in the US.
