We’re counting down and getting very close to the start of London Olympics. What’s the latest word? Cameron’s Government is even closer to panic.
It’s sixty four years since London last staged the Olympics and the Coalition Government was looking for a popularity boost.
Instead there are signs of panic as the shortfalls in security planning come to light. The latest one arrived as Government Ministers were going through final checks, “kicking the tyres”, as they strangely described it.
Quite a problem really. They discovered the private security firm, G4S, which was given the contract for Olympic security hasn’t managed to hire enough staff. They have been paid around $8M already and had six years to prepare – but that’s not enough apparently.
The Government is having to draft in 3,500 troops to cover the gaps. Yes, 3,500. Quite some hole in security. The troops, many of whom are on leave from Afghanistan, will be employed on routine checking duties. The problem seems to be getting security staff, security checked. But G4S may have left recruiting late to cut costs.
The missile launchers mounted on the roof of a block of flats are a different story. The residents living underneath them are not in love with the idea of suddenly becoming targets and launched a missile of their own, an appeal against them. This has been thrown out. The missiles are there “in defence of the realm” so that’s that. Details of evacuation plans have not been provided yet but a hasty knock on the door in the middle of the night may not be enough.
Then of course we have the block on competitors and spectators arriving for the games. The block that is known as Heathrow airport. As part of its programme of cuts the Coalition Government has slashed thousands of civil servants – including staff to check arrivals at Heathrow. The result is two hour queues and thousands of angry visitors forced to stand in line, sweating and confused.
The fear of illegal immigration is a big vote winner for Cameron so you might think a cut like this would not be on his agenda. But this one slipped through and the tabloid he fears the most – The Daily Mail – was able to come up with a scare story about ”thousands of illegals entering the country.” Panic buttons were hit and a top Civil Servant had to pay the price. In spite of the fact that it was probably one of Cameron’s Ministers, Theresa May, who was really to blame.
But it seems the problem hasn’t been solved and just days before spectators and competitors start arriving for the games – there are big hold ups. So what happens when all the extra traffic begins the swell the queues even more? Send in the troops. Again!
Calamity Cameron has been losing his temper quite often lately. For this out of touch, out of his depth Prime Minister - everything is about to get much, much worse.
