Any wise, rational person would agree that The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) should contact Michael Phelps as well as other celebrities known to smoke the green herb.

Michael Phelps would be an outstanding spokesman for the legalization of the recreational substance. There is no denying that Mr. Phelps is the fastest human swimmer alive, he has eight gold medals to prove these accomplishments. Certainly there are no cigarette smokers who can make such a claim. Therefore this proves that pot smoking does not destroy ones’ lungs as rapidly damaging as tobacco does. In addition it just may have actually increased his lung capacity helping him to hold his breath longer than his opponents.

Furthermore Mr. Phelps would be perceived as an honest young man, after all he did not attempt to hide or deny what he had done unlike our former president Bill Clinton. Then again career politicians are born to lie or at least trained to do so.

Michael could make thirty second television commercials showing him inhaling from his water pipe with a caption below reading, “Buy American and Be All You Can Be in Peace.” The next scene could show eight gold medals and the slogan, U.S.A Home of the Champion. This to be followed by George W. Bush with exploding bombs in the background and a scroll reading, “Don’t smoke pot! Kill your fellow man for money and support greedy oil tycoons! Be corrupt and buy foreign products and help destroy the United States’ economy.

I believe that if one high profile personality would defend their actions in a responsible manner, many more will follow. The problem is that none of us are ever shown responsible consumption of marijuana. The only time the ancient practice is presented to us is when the police are raiding fields, when Hollywood shows someone making a fool of themselves or anti drug lawmakers wishing to place blame elsewhere for their failing educational system.

Beer and liquor companies promote drinking and drinking a lot which is okay because they sum it up with “Drink Responsibly.” You never see “Drink Coors, Labatt, and Budweiser etc. until you are blind and go drive home.” Alcohol is a depressant and people act accordingly. They fight, abuse and annoy those around them. There are far less acts of violence committed by pot smokers than by alcohol drinkers.

When Plaxico Burress shot himself inside of a New York night club he was drinking not smoking. When Marshawn Lynch drove a woman down committing a hit and run he was reported drinking not smoking grass. When Mel Gibson degraded every Jewish person in the world he was drunk not high on pot. However when John Lennon sang “Give Peace a Chance” he was high on pot not drunk.

So what does this tell us as a society? It’s okay to get drunk and stupid, we’ll forgive you but if you smoke pot and request that we are civil to one another well then… You should be banned from the world and considered a lunatic. No wonder God is losing the battle, his most famous words included Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself.
