A childrens home immortalised by John Lennon  in the song Strawberry Fields Forever has removed the gates that are a Beatles fans attraction  in Liverpool.

The gates are the ones that the young Lennon used to sneak through to play in the grounds as a child. They have been replaced with brand new replicas.

One irate fan said ” If they were taking them down to put them in the Beatles Museum then that would be fine.”

Steve Barnes, who runs the Beatles Shop , and runs Beatles heritage tours, said: “This is an absolute disgrace and a betrayal of the city of Liverpool.

“Tens of thousands of people go to visit these gates every year. They are a shrine to the Beatles and having the originals replaced with replicas is just unacceptable.

The Salvation Army who own the property said that the gates had been removed because of their deteriorating condition: a fact not helped by fans peeling off pieces of paint to keep as a souvenier.

They said that a decision had yet to be made as to what to do with the gates.
