Talking points about Obama and Afghanistan.
President Obama has finally decided to send more troops to Afghanistan after months of stalling and dozens of press conferences. What took the president so long to make the call while American soldiers were dying? Back in December of 2008, then president-elect Obama said a troop surge in Afghanistan was one of his priorities. He even visited the troops there in summer during the campaign.
So why did it take him that long to come to a decision? He rushed the ‘stimulus bill’ through as fast as he could before anyone could read it, he did the same thing with Cash-For-Clunkers, and is trying to do the same thing for healthcare… but when our soldiers lives’ are at stake, suddenly there’s time to think and debate.
But now it’s out there; 30,000 troops will go to Afghanistan by summer of 2010. Joe Biden was against the surge… he favored using more drones in Pakistan and Afghanistan to combat the Taliban, instead of more ground forces. Doing both would be best though, among other things. Training more Afghan security forces is also on the docket, a good idea, but as long as the Afghan government is providing most of the funding.
Iraq had the same issue; not enough U.S troops or Iraqi security. The Iraqi oil revenues paid for a lot of their military advancement and training. But after the troop surge in Iraq that former president bush signed, the violence calmed down so much that now Afghanistan is centerfield and the focus of the world. This just may be a defining moment is the presidency of Barack Obama, as 9/11 was for George W. Bush.
The 2012 election is already making me feel excited. Obama has already dropped the ball with the stimulus, healthcare, and now Afghanistan. And not to mention that Acorn won’t be around to bully people into voting for him. Just a few more years, it’s going to be hard to wait…
