Opinion piece on the difference between George Bush and George Washington.

Ok, so you are just a little bit angry. Me too. Things aren’t like they used to be. And a weak boss of mine told me recently, “you can never go back.” “Things will never be how they used to be,” he said.

How true. Now we have George W. as our leader. Not George Herbert Walker (the old H.W.), but George, put it on a bumper sticker “Dub-ya.” (his last name doesn’t matter. It will never be Washington.

George Washington had the luxury of living in an era where TV reporters did not hound him. He lived in an age, where damn it, if he wanted to have an intern over and play hide the cigar… it would happen… virtually unnoticed. Washington was a hero. The father of our country. (Take that as you will).

But, alas, times have changed. Our George doesn’t get a lot of breaks. Our George announced the end of the war, way, way before the war really ever started. Anyone watch Saturday Night Live? Is there a reason backing up his almighty wisdom?

And his father, (not to be confused with the father of our country) won the war in Iraq, and then pulled out before finishing the fight. Perhaps we should call H. W. “the premature George.” He didn’t father any peace. In fact, he gave birth to the second coming of war. Thanks.

The wooden toothed version chopped down some cherry tree that got in his way. Oh, and by the way, fought for and obtained America’s freedom. For all you sixth-grade students out there, (our freedom was won from our very best friend and ally……England). Time really does heal all wounds.

We had our own Civil War a short time later. And there were outside powers that wanted to influence the outcome. Perhaps we were lucky those powers did not have the ability to quickly jump into the middle of the fray with a large, well armed army. Even today, we have our own problems, our own modern day civil strife.

Now, after a vote of our people, we have elected to shift power in Congress away from our George’s buddies. Perhaps this Thanksgiving we should give thanks for that leveling out of power. And say a prayer that we once again focus on America, as the founding father George did. The “Dems” have said they want to work with our George to eventually get our sons and daughters back home and allow Iraq to deal with itself. George Washington, I believe, would want that to happen. Washington would probably celebrate with each homecoming company of soldiers at the local tavern. I’m positive Washington would love happy hour! Have a pint and toast world peace. And even though he was a great general, I’m sure he would pray for the announcement “world peace has broken out” on the CBS Evening News.
