Was it the color of his skin, or the message he gave?

We embark on a historic moment in time. A new president of color. A president of a bi-racial couple. This moment is so monumental. Whether you like him or not, you would have to agree that you haven’t seen anything like it in your lifetime. Whether it was the outpouring of voters or the outpouring of young people who became involved for whatever reason. There hasn’t been a moment in history like this one. Was it the color of his skin, or the message he brought? Actually, they are both in the same. The message he brought was one that said ” I know you have seen politicians before. I know you have been given unfulfilled promises before. I know you have been let down before. But, this time there is some good that can come from those in government and from America, in general.

” What does this have to do with his skin color? Well,  to elect a partially African-American president, says that anything is possible. You want to be a doctor, go ahead. Regardless of your background, skin color, financial status, past mistakes. Go for it! Be a doctor. Don’t listen to negativity and or those who tell you it’s impossible. Go after that which seems impossible. And when you catch it, take a deep breath and then go after another impossible dream.  You know the idea that a president can be African- American, should inspire anyone of any race, social class, sexual preference, and or financial status. Why? Because the impossible just became possible. There was not  a warning it was coming. There was no preparation for it. There were many, many, obstacles in the way. Yet, it still happened. There was violent outbursts, threats, and division. There was hurt feelings, insults, and derrogatory remarks hurled. But the dream of one man, still manifested. This is the testimony to every person in this country. There will be times, where you will have a dream or vision that seems impossible. Your closest family and friends won’t believe in you. They will doubt the ability and the possibility.

They won’t mean any harm, but they won’t believe in it because it hasn’t been done. Or because you have never shown this side of yourself before. The test is not whether they believe. The test is whether you will believe and will continue to believe. This is the message of Barack Obama. Belief. Belief through sickness, pain, heartache, lies, rumors, backstabbing, insults, abandonment, haters, tiredness, and every other negative obstacle. This is the message he brings. His skin color and the fact that it was one of his many obstacles. The fact that through the most impossible and most devastating moments in his life, he kept believing in himself and his country.  There is the possibility of a better world. It can happen. It is not just talk. It can, in fact, happen. You can make a difference. You can make your life matter. However you see fit. Whatever inspires you. Look at your next president.

Take the time to walk his journey. Even now, with people being so hateful and threatening his life. Even now, with there being so much negative backlash against him and his family. Even now with his most private moments and conversations being public. He still loves his country. He still wants to serve the people. He still wants to make a difference. Your dreams are what drives you just as his were what drove him. Are all of us  so different? Don’t we have more in common than we do apart? Those who are so racially divided. Those who practice racism as if it were something to be proud of. You eat just like the person you hate. You work just like the person you hate. You pay bills, buy gas, need medical care, go to school, and get sick, just like the person that you hate.  You are more alike than you are different. The only thing that is different, isn’t even a factor in any of the decisions that you make everyday. You have never, if ever made a decision of importance based on your skin color.

You don’t pay less on your bills because of your skin color. You don’t decide what to eat based on your skin color. You don’t decide most of your day to day decisions based on your skin color. Yet, you spend majority of your life hating someone else’s for their’s. How silly! How pointless! How immature! Be inspired or be an inspiration. The message you should get from your next president is persistance, hope, and love. Love through the hurt, pain, and insults. Hope through the doubt, fears, and trials. Lastly, be persistant, through the tiredness, the lonely nights, and the tears. If he did it, your dreams are just as reachable.
