A critical look at a recent anti-abortion scare tactic campaign that moved through a college town.
I am against 90% of activist groups in this world. I know, bold statement right? But alas it is true. Most activist groups are nothing more than large groups of easily persuaded morons lead by a core group of persuasive pricks with a chip on their shoulder and nothing better to do. These groups do little more than yell at you and try to use scare tactics to get their way. Today, I ran headlong into such a group; an anti-abortion group demonstrating on a college campus.
The anti-abortion group visiting campus decided to forgo yelling at passing students and faculty. In place of yelling, the group put up pictures. Not pictures of anti-abortion demonstrators or pictures of some religious figure preaching against the sins of “murder.” Oh no, this group wanted to scare the living hell out of every single person who passed by, and as such put up posters of dead babies. Not just dead babies, but dead fetuses, blobs of something that looked like Jell-O, and disembodied limbs set next to coins for a size comparison. All this was on display right out in front of the University Center and therefore virtually impossible to avoid.
Needless to say I got as far away as possible as fast as possible. But, upon rounding another corner on my way to class I was accosted with another representation of the after math of unplanned pregnancy. Only, this time the posters were at least ten feet tall. It was impossible to look away from these monstrosities glaring down from at everybody passing beneath. Surrounding the base of this macabre monument to the horrors of abortion where tables asking the question “do you support the taking of innocent lives?” On either side of the table was a stack of “yes” and “no” cards individuals could sign to express their opinions about the topic.
As the special icing on the cake, driving around town was what I will refer to as the “abortion-mobile.” This panel van had (you guessed it) pictures of mutilated fetuses plastered on every conceivable surface. The same blood and gore that was being presented on campus was now being driven around the entire city. It is probably pertinent at this point to mention that when I spotted the abortion-mobile it was driving right along an elementary school. That is right, a van depicting scenes more graphic than those shown in movies such as SAW or Hostel (both are “R” rated movies, for extreme gore and violence) was driving next to an elementary school where any child could look out a window and see it.
I like to believe that I support everybody’s right to freedom of speech and expression, and I am staunchly against censorship of any kind. However, there is a point in time were every protester must learn to pull their head out of their ass and realize that they are no longer presenting their position in a plausible way. Maybe I would take the time out of my day to listen to a person’s pro-life opinion if it was well presented and logical. But I can guarantee you that if propaganda is being shoved down my throat that I will shut down and quickly regard the presenters as a fear based group with no logic behind their actions.
