Do we know what kind of change we are seeking in this presidential campaign? Does America even know what is best for themselves?

We, as America, are making history as a country. We have a woman and a black man running for president. While others may have sought this position, none have come close too be serious considered. While there are heated debates of racial issues and a tremendous amount of mud -slinging from certain parties, this has been a civilized campaign. We, as Americans, have come a long way in our diversity and ability to accept change.

“Change”. These are the words that Obama has run his campaign on. We, as Americans, are hungering for change. Are we so desperate for change that we soak up his words or do we really believe that he will follow through on his promises?

Whether Obama is speaking the words or not, the Democratic Party is basing their whole campaign on these words. We have even heard them spoken by Hillary. The one we have not heard utter these words are McCain. This may be his biggest mistake. There is a majority opinion that America is ready for a change and the next President will be the one who convinces the American people that he is the one to do this.

The problem is that uttering these words does not guarantee change. Elizabeth Hasselbeck, the staunch defender of the Republican Party on the morning show, The View, had a proposal that actually has some merit to it. In essence, she called for a “Prenuptial” agreement to be signed by whichever candidate ends up in the White House. Think about it America; each Presidential hopeful can make as many promises as he or she feels necessary to bring in the votes. Yet, if they make it into office, there is nothing that holds them to those promises. So does the next in line for President come down to the most eloquent speaker, the most experienced, the most sincere speaker, or the greatest liar? Who will be the next President to answer that 3am phone call? Moreover, when they do, what will there response be? Can we be certain that it will be the answer we so desperately need? Or will it be one based on lies, deceit, self-interest, or will it be the answer we need?

Are we as Americans best qualified to even know what that answer needs to be? Public opinion has swayed so much that if the President answered that call based on what the polls are saying he needs to say at any given moment, we would be laughed at by the whole world.

We need a President that can listen to the American people, weigh all sides of the situation, and make a spur of the moment decision that is in our best interest, instead of being based on the fickle judgment of the American people on any given day.
