A professor was teaching a course on ethics and medicine to a group of future doctors. He presented his class with a problem. A women has eight children, three of whom are deaf, two of whom are blind, and one who is mentally retarded.
This is a true story. A professor, pardon my memory, i can’t remember the exact name of the college, was teaching a course on ethics and medicine to a group of future doctors. He presented his class with a problem. A women has eight children, three who are deaf, two who are blind, and one mentally retarded. This same woman also has syphilis. Now she is pregnant. The professor then asked his class the fundamental question in this article; should she get an abortion? The students unanimously said that the women should get an abortion. The professor sadly declared that they have just killed Beethoven, one of the greatest composers the world has ever seen. Now if you are like me, after hearing this story you have a tear in your eye. We must put a stop to abortion. People try to justify abortion by saying, “what if the woman is a victim of rape?” The scientist who cures cancer could be born through a rape! Not that I am saying rape is good, far from it! My point is the same none the less, abortion can kill great people. Who knows where we would be if we had saved all the aborted lives. Forty million (and counting!) lives have been lost since abortion was legalized in the United States. And that’s just in the U.S.! Now I ask you, does letting 40 million women have “better” lives or go to college justify 40 million murders? I say no!

spew your archaic rhetoric on a political forum , not here….you have my name…you can directly contact me and I would be glad to enlighten you on the law. Go find Rush limbaugh and blog him your disgusting outlook on this subject. He will be far more embracing than I!!!
I guess that means you think murder is okay? Yeah NO!
I don’t understand Richard why you are so against a simple article. If you don’t agree, that’s your right, but you don’t need to bash someone for voicing their opinion. We do have freedom of speech and there was no hint of libel, therefore this article is completely harmless. What about the law needs enlightenment in this case? Why is the author’s outlook disgusting? Be not rude or condescending just because your opinion is different from that of the author. We are all entitled to our own opinions and belief systems.
Nice to see someone who feels as I do regarding abortion. It is MURDER, no matter the circumstances and it should be stopped. Too many women use it as their only form of “contraception”. I had my first child at a very young age, I had to grow up quickly, but I chose to get pregnant. The unanimous question was “what are you going to do about it?”. “I’m going to have a baby, what else is there to do about it?” was my answer.
It’s amazing that someone (Richard) could call your outlook on this disgusting! That is insane. You did a great job with this article. People need to stop living selfish, empty lives and realize how precious life is. And that includes the lives of sweet little babies. And I have had the exact same thoughts: I wonder what we don’t have as a society because of abortion?
Listen, I’m not pro abortion, I would never think about it, but the government has no right in telling a women what they can and cannot do with their body. It’s the lack of education and the social climate that creates these problems and outlawing abortion is not the way to change the scenario. I’m sorry if I offend, my words can be harsh. But when people infringe upon the rights of others that are lawful acts, then I am harsh. Emphasize education not governments expansion within our private lives. Are you willing to adopt all the aborted children? Morally, yes, it is wrong. But choose your battles wisely. This country has far more important priorities than to continue bringing politics into a moral issue. Seperate the two issues.!
This will always be a hot topic, so i will take the 5th. Very good, and this makes a person think.
Abortion on demand- in Canada it is done on the taxpayer’s dime- is a symptom of the selfish, me first, quick fix, society that we have now.
The very fact that there are so many in Western society who believe that a human in the womb is not worthy of human rights, not even the right to life, is a sign of how deceived people have let themselves become.
Just because something is legal does not make it morally right. What if pedophilia became legal? After all, pedophiles are born with this sexual orientation, are they not? If God made them that way, who are we to judge? They should not be held accountable for their actions. Would it become socially acceptable?
Nice article. I agree.
Beethoven was over-rated. Just kidding – nice article. I don’t really agree with your POV and of course for every argument against something there are equally compelling scenarios for it. For instance – if you had the opportunity to abort Hitler or Osama Bin Laden, would you? It’s all speculation anyway. Still, provocative and reasonably well written.
We have too many people. I am torn over the issue, though, because I think it’s incredibly stupid to let… them… just, get an abortion because they were that stupid.
I think human lives mean very little because if you take it down to an even more fundamental level, there are trillions (well, most likely a more astronomical number) of kids who could have been conceived, thousands of times a day. Nobody complains about them.
As for killing Bethoven, there will always be annother. Whoever dies, it becomes merely a setback to humanity, because before long someone will come along and take their place.
I am anti-abortion…I believe every conceived individual has a right to be born and not murdered unwillingly. However, I am (obviously) pro-contraceptives, if you don’t want a child, be careful from the beginning – resorting to literally destroying your own child’s life is absurd.
Richard, I wanted to address your statement that the government has no right to tell women what they can do with their bodies. I sincerely believe that abortion is murder, therefore i believe that the government does DOES have the authority to control what happens in this area. You don’t say that the government has no right to tell people that they can’t go out and shoot their neighbor. I also don’t believe that the child is part of the woman’s body. Six weeks after conception the baby has a detectable brainwave. I think it is enough to say that that baby is a life form outside its mother. It is not an organ. organs do not have brainwaves (excluding the mother’s own brain of course). What saddens me is that the same standard used to determine if people are dead, if there is any detectable brain wave, is said to not be applicable to determine if there is life! At six weeks of age the baby has a detectable brainwave so by the standard used in hospitals the world over, the baby is alive!
Not all the women had or have “better lives” from it, chances are it saved the child from having a crappy life. Most people who have unwanted children do not take care of their children the way they should be taken care of. There are more children who need to be adopted than those who want to adopt. If there is meant to be someone great he or she will be born. If not it’s all in the hands of “God” right? I mean he’s the one with the plan. There are many children who have great potential to be great people, yet they die from disease and other horrible things. Besides, even if someone great was supposed to be born, the world wouldn’t be effect really because they would never know what they lost.
I have to say that I am pro choice (obviously). Before you all jump down my throat, I must say:
1. I rarely check back to see what others have to say to me so if you’re that disgusted with me, send me a private message. Either way I’ll probably laugh.
2. Regardless of how I got pregnant I would NOT have an abortion. But just because I wouldn’t that doesn’t mean others shouldn’t. However, I do think it’s disgusting for women to use abortion as a contraceptive because it’s not.
3. I also do not plan on having children biologically because of the fact that there are so many children out there who need good families. When I adopt, if my children grow to be anti-abortion; it will be their choice without ridicule or anything like it.
I seriously believe that a cure for abortion is more people willing to adopt more than just babies who look like them. Older children and children with health defects deserve love too. Otherwise we have more and more children in abusive and neglectful homes and more and more children without homes.
I do not believe that any child who has been born to abusive homes or to be orphans should have not been born because that’s ridiculous and that would mean that so many people that I love, would be in that category. I believe that every child born deserve love, family and stability but I do not believe that a child deserves the probability of a horrible life just because people who would rather have children, force others to have children but who are not interested in adopting, can have a “clear” conscience.
Um, so if brainwaves means the baby is alive then…Then so long as the baby is under six weeks and does not have brain waves, it’s ok to abort? After all, it wouldn’t be counted as alive. And they do have those first response things and you can find out two weeks before your missed period, if you’re pregnant.
Plain and sweet i must agree with the writers standpoint here… abortion is indeed murder. What is murder? The taking of anothers life, and this is exactly as such. Although i do agree with richard no one has any right to tell another what to do with thier own bodies, i must submit to you the fact that morally it is indeed wrong to abort whether the mother chooses or not. Even scientifically as S A Johnson had pointed out about when a baby is legally alive… However im fairly certain by natural law, a baby is alive once sperm cell fertilizes egg.
ALSO S A Johnson… a baby is technically legally alive by the 5th week, which is when a heart is formed and fully functional. Sitation below.
I do agree, though on the one count that unwanted children do lead crappy lives, but crappy life VS no life… <_< i doubt i need answer that. If you look at any countries past, usually the harshest conditions generate the most brilliant of people.
http://www.americanpregnancy.org/weekbyweek/week5.htm
This is my firm belief, i am not assualting either of you with words, merely stating my stand points.
Citical lense, I agree completely. If it seemed as if i was justifying abortion before 6 weeks of age i apologise. I believe it is wrong to abort a baby from conception to birth. I was simply stating a little known fact about a baby’s brainwaves.
Oh no worries bull basket =]
i was able to read your intentions, i was not confused, hence forth i didn’t say anythig mentioning your name lol
Just S A used it as somewhat as backbone for his stand point.
Also perhaps im late for just realizing… that Mr. Syed is rather correct in his words… If you want nothing to do with a child… Either be protected, or just don’t have sex
Yes abortion is murder, but what if those 40 million grew up not to become the next brilliant doctor, or artist, but instead a bunch of murderers and thieves? Sure the would could have become a better place, but it also could have become far worse. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not pro abortion, I just think this article is extremely short sighted and naive.
Isn’t ethics fun?
Ethics is my specialty, but like any good ethics student =D
Plan A is to state… those are variables, and the ability to predict those aborted babies lives is impossible. Therefore morally speaking the certain events that could have been halted {such as abortions} can/could have been stopped, where as “what ifs” arent in question here.
See it can leane either way… they could be murderers or rapists… they could be doctors or psychologists… but ethics is about good vs evil etc… fine lines and breaking barriers, not predicting the lives of aborted babies =]
Only way to find out thier lives, is prevented abortions… and besides you like ethics…? That is where we would debate if murder is good or not, or if ts ever deserved. However that shall be for a different thread. 8D

It should be illegal to kill convicted criminals too then right? We kill them to stop them from doing something bad again. I don’t believe in killing, but if a child is born who has to live off food stamps for the rest of their short life only to die from hypothermia or something else seems cruel. We need better care for children who have parents without paychecks. Good article though.
very interesting point.
The part about Beethoven has been circulating nearly verbatim in pamphlets for a few decades now by right-to-lifers but the facts about the siblings of Beethoven as stated are incorrect.
It makes a lovely argument for the pulpit though even if the facts are somewhat wrong.
One just never knows how a life will turn out.
Take the story of a young cadet returning home from the First World War. He had escaped being killed numerous times, seemingly almost by divine aid while his comrades-in-arms died.
This man, young Adolf with his mind filled with hopes for his beleaguered and broken nation of Germany would some years later again rise to power and his name would forever be tied to the horrors of the Nazi Germany. Hitler, -someone should have taken a coathanger to his momma while he was still in the womb.
First of all I would like to make it clear to everyone that I am a Christian. All my views I draw from teachings in the Bible. Now I know that many time when someone brings Christianity into a debate people become hostile, but I would please ask that you all refrain from hostility. I draw my ethics from the Bible. All ethics must come from somewhere. To address Babyface Jam, I do not believe it is wrong to give the death penalty. It is very clear in the Bible that capital punishment may be administered in the event of certain crimes. Being conceived is not one of those crimes. That is the difference between abortion and the death penalty. Now it is very true that those 40 million people could have turned out to be rapists and murderers, but we cannot kill innocent children based on what they ‘might’ do. My stance is we must save them because we do not know what they will do. We cannot make a judgment of the quality of a life that has yet to happen and say that it is not worth living. We cannot do that to a life that is already born! If we start down that road it can lead to awful places; the killing of diseased or crippled people because they don’t have “a good quality of life”, the killing of older people to lessen their “burden on society”. These are ideas the Nazi party entertained, and America should not begin down that road.
Very powerful example. I personally disagree with abortion for moral reasons. But, I do think that certain cases – incest, rape, etc.. are an exception. Just as the child could grow up to be find a cure for cancer, the child could also grow up to follow in the fathers genetic footsteps. There are some forms of insanity that are hereditary.
Hi there! I like the article.
There is no problem with abortion (im not pro) but the action prior to that. Why create something and kill it afterwards. The peeps doing this is kind’a crazy. Let us all stand for what is right. After all life’s too short.
I understand you have your own thoughts on what you see as what is right and what is wrong, but please do not think this article possesses any leverage to persuade anyone. Abortion is a touchy and personal subject and should be approached as such, for many reasons and the bit about women… If it wasn’t for so many women sticking to their career and academic goals, as a nation we would have been set back immensely. So please before delivering such messages, really think about what you have to say and how you want to say it, as well as give better references especially in the matter of swaying judgment. Alternatively, all you may be left with is a tattered name, and simply not taken seriously. Putting aside that I obviously do not agree with your post, overall I believe you should work on how to deliver a point and at the same time get a feel for whom your audience is as well as, how they can be approached effectively and compassionately.
These are the reasons why abortion should keep ILLEGAL!
http://www.socyberty.com/Issues/Little-Known-Facts-About-Abortion.204087
As a nurse, I held the hand of many who would have died if they had gone ahead with the pregnancy. If the law stated she would have to die because of this, to me that is murder, the woman is well over 6 weeks of age, and her heart has been beating for many years. Where is the difference?
Morals, ethics, personal belief and religion will never stop abortion, if it has to be carried out then quality medical control is required.
My personal belief is never shown towards anyone who has a genuine reason to abort.
That is a ridiculous butterfly-effect argument.
Maybe because you posted it on the internet, people who are anti-abortion will see the level of ridiculousness with which they are associating themselves, and decide to become pro-choice. You probably just doomed hundreds of future composers to such a fate. See how silly that type of argument sounds?
May the fetus you save be gay (and we all know where you stand on that issue before you even have to say anything).
I actually add that in also, it is my firm belief that rape, incest, and other sexually UNWANTED activities do not grant the RIGHT to abort but i think leaves room to allow it.
I agree with you. If you really don’t want a baby, choose adoption, not abortion. If you think you’re mature enough to make love with someone, then you should be mature enough to at least have the baby and give it to someone who can’t have one.
I don’t think abortion should be illegal, even though I am pro-life myself. But I do think the abortion on demand scenario we’ve basically got now is unacceptable. I wouldn’t deny an abortion to a woman who had been raped, or been a victim of incest, even though I might hope she would make a different choice. Nor would I judge someone for aborting a baby if their own life was at risk. But abortion as contraception? No. Especially not when, in my country at least, contraception is freely (and I mean you don’t have to pay for it) available to anyone who needs it.
And the “what ifs” of what sort of life a person might or might not lead are totally irrelevant. Even after a child comes into the world, we have no idea what life holds for them whether they have been born into a wealthy family or not. The question boils down to the status of the unborn child, not the future status of that child. We are on dangerous ground when we start eliminating others without their consent because we believe their quality of life might be poor in the future.
And I managed not to mention either religion or Hitler – why does he always pop up in these discussions?!
This is a very sensitive argument for most people and will get many passionate if not defensive responses. Certainly from those who have dealt directly with these issues before. I agree with Alina Beck that abortion should not be used as a contraception- when protection from pregnancy is so avidly and freely available in our society. It is irresponsible and shows a gross disrespect for human life. I have never agreed with abortion unless a feotus is terminally ill or the mother was raped. As a rape victim myself I believe that if I had been pregnant- fortunatly this did not happen- I would have terminated the feotus, with the view point of \’Why should I carry something that was forced upon me in a degrading, forceful and destructive act.\” If the government were to force a raped woman to carry a child that was violently embeded in them it would be a violation of their human right- freedom of choice. So a woman\’s freedom to choose who she will have sex with is taken and then her freedom to choose what happens to her body is taken too! A double violation,-one physical, the other emotional none the less- a double rape of freedom of choice! I think not. I am pro-choice and pro – life. I am no fence sitter I just see both sides and I think that is the only way to make rational ethical choices for women in society.
Bullbasket – the Bible actually says very little on the subject of abortion; but I have always found this one passage from Ecclesiastes particularly interesting:
“Blessed are the unborn, for they shall never know the pain of living.”
Sort of sounds like a tacit approval of abortion to me. What do you think?
I’ve seen the “Beethoven” story a couple time before. Usually in a spam email.
I, personally, find abortion to be a horrible thing. I have four beautiful children. My youngest was completely un-planned. We didn’t want a fourth, but I balked at getting a vasectomy so…we have number four, oops. I never once thought of asking my wife to have an abortion.
That said, I disagree with the author. Making abortion illegal will not stop abortions. It will only make them less safe.
I agree with happymum that it should not be a form of contraception.
I believe the only way to make abortion go away is by education. And I’m not talking about “Abstinence Only” education. That is a joke and a dangerously un-funny one at that.
I have more to say on the subject, but I feel my own article coming on so I will save it for that.
I could not find the verse you were referring to, Louis, but these are the verses i base my argument off of. If you can find the whole reference, and would post it, i would appreciate it.
Did not he who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us both within our mothers? (Job 31:15).
Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you even at my mother’s breast. From birth I was cast upon you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God (Psalm 22:9-10).
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be (Psalm 139:13-16).
This is what the LORD says—he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you…(Isaiah 44:2).
Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all you who remain of the house of Israel, you whom I have upheld since you were conceived, and have carried since your birth. Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you (Isaiah 46:3-4).
And now the LORD says—he who formed me in the womb to be his servant to bring Jacob back to him and gather Israel to himself, for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD and my God has been my strength (Isaiah 49:5).
The word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:4-5).
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy” (Luke 1:41-42, 44).
You shall not murder (Exodus 20:13).
I believe abortion and murder are the same things. I do not think a woman that was raped should get an abortion. One sin does not justify another sin. Rape doesn’t justify murder.
This is such a contraversial topic. I do have on a first hand account of what having an abortion does to a woman. Back when I was in my early 20’s I got pregnant with my husbands and my first child. Toward the end of my pregnancy I developed what they called toxemia or hypertension because of the pregnancy. I was admitted to the hospital immediately, and they tried to induce labor. This went on for three days and the third day delivered my son Because of them waiting so long and all the complications incurred he went without oxygen for some during the delivery, and I was a code blue but they managed to bring me back. To make a long story shorter, I ended up so overwhelmed with my first pregnancy I was just managing day to day (my husband was in college at this time) so I did alot of everything myself . I ended getting pregnant again in a few months and was faced with the question about going through with this pregnancy. I asked my doctor and he just said he couldn’t tell me what to do but if it were him he wouldn’t try to do it. I also asked my husband the same thing and he said he wouldn’t tell me what I should do either. After being so scared and nearly dying myself I decided to go through with the abortion. We traveled to Pensacola Florida and I went and had the abortion. Now some thirty years later I realize I had no right to act like God and put an end to a human life. I should have trusted him to know that everything would turn out right. But now I don’t ever go through the christmas holidays and not think that I should have been celebrating one of my childrens birthdays. I will always have a hole in my heart for that child I killed. We as christians should always trust God enough to work out anything . I wish someone from a church or another person that had been through that would have talked to me and made me understand that only God has the right to take away a life . Now that I am older and close to the Lord I understand that. I have asked God many times over for forgiveness for taking a life , my child’s life but the void is still there, and always will be.
mmknbama – you should write that comment into an article. It is a really honest insight into an emotional subject. It is interesting to read how you have developed your position on the issue.
Bullbasket – I don’t quite understand how those Biblical references comment on the subject of abortion specifically. It doesn’t really matter though – I can understand the pro-life POV and might even be pro-life myself. Fortunately its not a decision I have had to make and these days I don’t have anything to worry about.
You’re basing everything on what might be? Then what if this child was Hitler or a serial killer? Potential accounts for nothing in this siutation.
Your professor friend is an idiot of the highest caliber, as this is a very simple tennet of philosophy.
after having a baby i tend to side with pro-lifers more but i don’t want the government to dictate what is good for a woman. let the woman decide and get off ur high chair
First of all I want to commend the author for writing this article. Today speaking against abortion takes guts and shear courage and anyone who does so has my respect. I know we have a lot of problems but no one has answered my question as to whether disposing of these children hasnt been one of our aggravated problems today. These children might have been our answer to the problems we have today. I hope more people research this problem of society and start coming up with answers to. I hope more people research and write about it.
If anyone gets a chance go over to Norma McKorvey’s sight and read her testimony after all of these years as Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade.
Your going to be surprised.
Anti-Abortion is not a religious cause. Its everybody’s cause.
We have many problems in society but I personally believe that abortion is another form of what the Ancients referred to as child sacrifice.
Even if you arent affiliated with a religion of any kind ask yourselves this: Dont women deserve better than abortion?
Havent we as a society come farther than ancient sacrifice of the past? We have major breakthroughs regarding pre-natal and natal care this is no longer necessary. Isnt disposing of these children and hurting the women, pyschologically, physically and spiritually what the feminists have somewhat been fighting for. Yet you dont see these same women in the March for Life in Washington every January. Isnt a women being degraded when she has to dispose of a child because of the procreative act she and her partner participated in to begin with? Isnt she and the child being rejected? Think about this.
We should also have come farther when it comes to teen preganancy and the causes behind it? These and many other questions should and need to be answered.
Ive been talking to some of the kids (20’s) who are friends with my niece. They tell me they are finally talking to the kids about this. You know what I say, “Its about time”.
I also commend Jason Everett and Christina Everett who go around to talk to the kids in the high schools. If anyone gets a chance check these two individuals out.
I am a religious and spiritual person but I also see those who do not affiliate themselves with any particular denonomination or no denomination at all. You dont have to be anything to respect life.
We have become a society of disposal. We dispose of these children everyday. Yet we find ourselves at a critical time regarding the economy, etc. and we have been complaining that we need answers. I think we have disposed and wasted some of those answers but only some of us care. I hope this changes. We have to find a better way.
Im sorry but I think humans are set apart from the Animal Kingdom by their brains and we have to start using them ethically and soundly. People today want to reduce humanity to the animalistic and this is wrong.
Anyway if anyone interested I wrote about Norma McKorvey (Norma), Two Dilemmas and I am Failure here on Triond.
God Bless to everyone here and to the author.
Anyone interested check out Priests for Life its very interesting subject.
Also if anyone interested check out that Hitlers drug problem and Im not condoning what he did, was a possible factor in who he became and what he did.
Also keep in mind that particular times in History had different mindsets than we have today. Perhaps we have come a long way baby.
I say peace to all.
Whether or not it was Beethoven or not everyone is missing the point. MLK could have been aborted. You could have been aborted. Whether you agree with abortion or not is beside the point. The woman has the right to kill the baby. (Ghandi said abortion is murder) But she will never know what that baby was to become. Look up limbless wrestlers on google. Kid comes out the womb with no arms, no legs and ends up wrestling for University of Georgia. Good job on her for not being selfish. Every life deserves to find its own way and every woman has the right to keep her legs closed if she doesn’t want a baby. Every dude has the right to wear a condom. Good article.
I think abortion is wrong,but i respect everybody’s opinion.
The way I see it is God gives us life..and he should be the only one to take it from anyone.
The Greatest tragedy of our time is the mass lie turned belief that killing a child is wrong the day after it’s born but is o.k. the day before.
If you think abortion is ok, Than you are guilty and have blood on your hands. I make no apologies for this belief. Murder is Murder.
A vegetarian leaks.
