Is it too early to declare him a day?
Now that America has elected her first African American president, shall we have a Barack Obama Day? Should we just shove him into that all encompassing generic President’s Day? Someone, probably the president who didn’t have his own day, decided Americans were getting too many days off work to honor these great Americans so presently they are all recognized as one “group effort”.
I’m not thinking, at this juncture, that coupling him in the middle somewhere will go over too well with most Americans. Unless, of course, he blows it. (And I don’t mean like the other one did!) Now that the lines of racism are closing in, not by any means touching mind you, shall we entertain the idea of White History Month or even Day? We’re finally opening the door to so many options; it will probably take our younger, and obviously more accepting, generation to make that one come to fruition.
Who decides these “days” anyway? If it’s a congressional decision, forget it for twenty more years or probably plan on it being it a posthumous recognition. I think it should be left up to the voters. You know, when we go to the polls and they have all of that ridiculous rhetoric that no one understands anyway, just add it to the bottom. “Do you feel this guy deserves his own day?” Connect the line to complete yes or no. That takes, what, three seconds? And why didn’t they combine “Wear Red Day”, which, by the way is today, with Valentine Day? Would that have confused retailers a bit too much? We are still short a holiday in August. How about “Hot Day”? Gee, what would we buy? Nothing?
It is definitely too early to determine if he, in fact, will be worthy of a “day”. Certainly the fact that he is currently even serving as our president greatly contributes to the components we use to determine worthiness.
