Beam Me Up Shoddy

A couple of years ago the great leader and statesman George W Bush proclaimed that we will once again walk on the surface of the moon. At first I am sure that the press took these words with a large pinch of salt. But no, this announcement was confirmed by the top bods at NASA. It turns out that we do indeed plan to walk the moon again, or for the first time depending on your beliefs. Isn’t this a major cop out. This decision is like a magician showing you a trick and then just doing it again cause he cant manage anything else.

They have said that a mission to the moon is a precursor to a manned mission to mars. That a base on the moon is the answer to how to reach mars. This is literally like heading out for a long car journey and setting up camp at the end of your driveway. That somehow by then there is a need for a break.

Other suggestions have hinted that a base on the moon could be a tourist destination – WHAT!!!!! I know people like the sun on holidays but removing the atmosphere is going a bit far. Also what does the moon have to offer yes you will have gone into space but in reality your venture is no more spectacular than going to Disney World paying full entry price and then just hanging around in the ticket office.

Why would anyone want to go to space when for the same price you can have two weeks in Benidorm and an Aston martin – not that I recommend these together maybe a round the world trip and a Rover…

The desire to go to space is not going to be the only reason that so called space tourism will fail. The main reason is that the main proprietor is going to be a Brit. If we were to find one of our own to attempt to commercialise space then Richard Branson is the person for it. But, really it’s a bit big out there no place for mistakes. Virgin Galactic sounds good but come on Virgin Rail get floored by leaves on the line how are they gonna handle re-entry cause a free bottle of water and a flapjack isn’t great compensation for that going wrong.
