California Prison Debate

   I’ve been wondering what the California Government should do about the prison’s they are over crowded and the budget doesn’t have enough money to build new ones. This subject is very controversial and has created a heated debate. So far right wing Republicans have been protesting the prison budget idea. They say that letting criminals out of the prison would cause more problem’s then it would solve.

They say that letting criminals out of the prison would cause more problem’s then it would solve.

   Meanwhile Liberal Democrats  are saying that the prison budget is a good thing because the economy is so bad that many people are just committing crimes just to get 3 hots and a cot. Many Democrats also want the prisoner’s work in the prison. I talked to Democrat Assemblyman Jim Beall yesterday and he said, “I believe that convicts should have a balance between punishment and redemption.” He felt that convicts should have a chance to redeem them selves through hard work. I personally felt the same. He also said GPS tracker’s could be also used to monitor the criminals released.

   I interview a anonymous intelligent person (non-party affiliated) and I felt that he had great idea’s on what to do about the prison problem. He suggested putting lower security prisoners in old military bases. He said, “The military bases have perimeter fences and gate houses and also barracks which could house the prisoners.” He also suggested making criminals who vandalize public property clean it up. He lastly suggest making lower security prisoners do simple labor like farming and simple manufacturing with incentives such as the food grown on the farm would be fed to the prisoner’s and  profit from the manufactured products would go back partly back to the prisoner’s.

However what most agree is that California Prison’s are overcrowded.

However what most agree is that California Prison’s are overcrowded. The prison’s so far are over 200% over filled making California Sate Prison’s the most over crowded prisons in the USA. Jim Beall also suggested deporting foreign prisoners. What concerns me is the cost of California Prison’s they need much reform. The prison’s costed nearly 10 percent of the state budget!

I hope those prison’s get reformed.
