Congress is determined to pass a very expensive “recovery” plan. The question is who will it help?

Our Congress is working on a plan to take us out of this recession. It is going to cost the taxpayer and two or three generations not yet paying taxes a lot of money. The plan is designed to get the economy up and running again to return the USA to a strong economic machine with continuous growth and general well being for all.

Obviously this is coming across a bit cynical. It cannot be helped because there is too much hypocrisy in it all. As the details for this huge recovery plan that will cost $825 billion or more, become available there is some uncertainty about whom this is going to help. A politically independent study by the Congressional Budget Office is saying that first real evidence of the plan will not come until 2010 which by the way is an election year. What a coincidence that Congressional members up for reelection will have some nice ribbon cutting ceremonies to help things along. So, it appears the plan should be called the Congressional Right to Work Plan.

So what about the desire to help the unemployed now? That idea seems to be heading to the sidelines. Rather than focus on helping those in need now, we will be more concerned about making sure Congress stays employed, not necessarily working but employed. The speed at which Congress is being asked to approve this thing is scary. With more dollars on the line than the cost for the war in Iraq, this bill is supposed to be made law by the middle of February. It is crazy.

Why don’t they just slow down, consider the various options, listen to all sides and actually hold hearings on the plan they have in the works? After all, the bill is not going to help anyone right away so why worry about rushing through it, unless of course someone is afraid the plan will be actually read and perhaps criticized? We are not off to a very good start with this new government.
