Susan Sarandon has made the news headlines making political statements. Should Hillary Clinton fear a challenge?
I read this significant headline about Susan Sarandon urging politicians to end Iraq occupation. The funny thing is I just watched “The Banger Sisters” the night before and I wasn’t in the “Susan for office” frame of mind. However, it occurred to me that Ronald Reagan did star with a monkey in “Bedtime for Bonzo.” The film most likely served more as inspiration for Michael Jackson than to the world of politics. Susan Saradon and her partner in life Tim Robbins have been as politically active as they have been prolific in quality movie parts. They both are amazing examples of balancing quality careers with quality of life causes.
A question raised
Should star power be used to promote political causes? Right or wrong is judged by each individual person. Movies stars are used to sell products all over the world and are a proven marketing force. Look at how many people buy products from infomercials with known stars and celebrities appearing in them. How many people have purchased a Total Gym because of Christy Brinkley and Chuck Norris hawking them? Better yet, how many of those people think these stars got their physiques from the workout equipment? When it comes to star power, people are gullible. That is why politician use them in their own campaigns. They want to capitalize on that gullibility.
A conundrum
It is fair to say a star or celebrity is okay to front a humanitarian cause and not a political cause? It fits the fickle finger of the public interest forum. You know what I mean, “You are a star because we made you a star. You’re not a star because we don’t need you anymore.” (I just had a relationship flashback) Now, we are saying, “We control your Fifth Amendments rights.” The truth is what right do we really have to do this? None, but we do it away. It is a self-implied right that we have no right to enforce but we do. Then, we sucker the celebrity or star in to do what we want and place them in the corner when we don’t want them to do anything. I ask again, it that fair?
A problem solved
Susan Saradon and Tim Robbins are co-habitors. They have a long-standing relationship built on love and trust and not a piece of paper. A political team of President Saradon and Vice President Robbins could solve the current gay marriage and equal partner rights issues troubling our nation in state-by-state referendums. They will serve as an example of what a relationship is all about. No offense to Hillary as much as I admire you and I did think you husband was a great President, you have a credibility problem in this forum. I also think if you do get elected, hubby Bill may become your Billy Carter. I see the Commander in Chief scenario from the short-lived TV series more effective with Susan and Tim. With Hillary and Bill, I fear the return of the Carter administration circus atmosphere. In my eyes, Jimmy Carter was a great man done in by his family.
Readjusting my thoughts
Going back to the Carter thing, maybe I hit on something. Hillary gets elected. The clan does a remake of “Here come the Carters.” After four years, Susan can play Regan to Hillary’s Carter. My suggestion is in the meantime take on roles that are more serious and stay away from monkeys. Let Tim be your comic relief. Moreover, pick better forums to make your political statements. The celebrity news columns lack the prestige of the New York Times. Then again, that could be another conundrum.
