Will incoming Democratic Lawmakers surrender Iraq to Iran and Syria? A responsible approach to withdrawal from Iraq.
The current situation in Iraq limits the change in policy a Democratic Congress and Senate can pursue. Leaving prematurely would deepen the existing chaos and throw the entire region into dangerous uncertainty. The only prudent move at this time, would be to accelerate the training and arming of the Iraqi Military and Police Forces, thus allowing them to wrest control of the country from the insurgents.
Strategic re-deployment should be limited to areas within the country that would allow the current U.S. Forces to secure the borders with Syria and Iran. These two protagonists are the main threat to the stability and peace in Iraq. They are apparently; arming, training and paying the “so called insurgents”, that are in reality an invading force bent on domination of a neighbouring country. Syria and Iran have a great deal of experience in these matters, Lebanon, Gaza and the West Bank to name a few.
Democratic Policy must be realistic; the troops will not be home soon. A U.S. Military presence in Iraq may be required for a decade, though not in the heart of Bagdad. The U.S. Forces should be placed in bases that will allow control of the borders with Iran and Syria, as well as retaining the ability for rapid reaction forces to support the Iraqi Military anywhere in the country when they need assistance. Casualties can be reduced at the same time support is maintained for an ally and Sovereign Nation that has requested our support.
