Opinion peace on the Harvard Professor arrest.
O.k., let’s take a look at this issue that really should not be an issue at all. First off, the President has been catching a lot of heat over his comments. President Obama was completely in the right to call the Cambridge police department “stupid”. The word “stupid” would apply directly to the officer who claimed to be an FTO or Field Training Officer.
Sgt. Crowley was playing the cop who got his shoe pissed on, and he wanted payback. So he took Mr. Gates to jail to show his young colleague that he could. Henry Louis Gates probably ran verbal circles around the Sgt., leading to a pissing contest. A cop with a two year degree versus a Harvard Professor always bet on the Harvard guy.
So they stood there and pushed each other’s buttons until the fuzz decided to detain Mr. Gates. Also, notice that Mr. Gates was handcuffed in the front, which is not standard procedure. This is important because it shows that the cop knew the man lived there.
Now, let’s turn the spotlight on to the idiot who called him in. I am sure his neighborhood is very exclusive and that all people there are known to their neighbors. Obviously one of his neighbors called it in. Why is no one finding out more about this idiot?
The scene, midday, the perceived crime, breaking and entering into a bright yellow house in broad daylight. WTF? Not to mention the fact these were older men, not the demographic normally represented in people that burgle. This person that called it in will soon be cast under the horrific glare of the media spotlight. People have been toasted under such conditions.
Getting back to Mr. Obama’s comments, cops generally generalize (stereotype) every day. Private citizens do the same thing. The problem we have with race in this country is that we do not talk about it. Be careful, this is not really a free country, not if you are “politically correct”. Spending more time fixing our health care system and economy should take precedence over police acting “stupidly”, although they often do. Mr. Obama was merely pointing out the obvious.
There are now more police on the streets of America than ever before. The United States is a police state. The government is really nervous about losing control after the Bush bash. Cops should be chasing criminals, not arresting homeowners.
