The argument goes on “Should we pull our troops out of Afganistan now?” and is History repeating itself with lack of support for the Military?

Over the years I have been researching past wars and military campaigns and have come to the conclusion that Ministers of Parliament and the Ministry of defence have and and I fear will never learn that they cannot go into combat without the support of adequate military hardwear.
You only have to look at the Crimean (Balaclava), African (Rourke’s drift) and Asian (The Khyber) during the Victorian era to realise the inadequate leadership qualities; to realise that now in the Twenty-first Century that little has change except for the technical improvement of our weaponry available.
During the First and Second World Wars there was some evidence of technical know how, although there again there was financial issues that left shortages in equipment and led to other countries getting involved, thus making them “World Wars”.
The Iraq War against Saddam Hussein has proved the same yet again with soldiers even having to wear trainers in some cases and the withdrawal of air strikes appeared to disappear without hardly a whisper.
In Afghanistan, I would have thought more areal strikes, would be dispersed to clear paths for our troops to make ground on the Taliban. What has happened to our spy satellites and mine sweepers from the sky to lay a safe path for our troops to drive their unprotected land-rovers across? (They might as well give them push bikes and a flag to let the Taliban know where they are.)
I feel that the Government and the UN are using the wrong tactics or they would have destroyed the Taliban by now. As for our own Government and MOD, they are a disgrace and should be held responsible for the loss of those lives many being teenagers. I am sure this country would get more recruits if they knew that they had a better chance of survival with adequate equipment. But now the death toll has risen I would think twice about signing up if I was young enough.

Excellent points. My father was a history teacher. I remember him teaching the old saying, those who forget the past are doomed to relive it. It is essential to look at former situations to determine success or failure. Or even if the gains are worth the loss. Thank you for this thought provoking piece. ~Mindee~
