When watching your local weather (versus the Weather Channel) could be the difference between life and death.
Hurricane Gustav threatens the Gulf Coast with its 115 mph winds as it prepares to land ashore.
Hurricane Gustav can cause potential damage to South Alabama, South and Central Mississippi, the majority of Louisiana, and a portion of Texas.
However, when you tune in to the Weather Channel, most of what you will see and hear about is New Orleans, La.
Hurricane Katrina was devastating for a vast majority of people in Louisiana and Mississippi.
South and Central Mississippians lived for weeks without Power, Water, Home Phones, or Cell Phones. Many were trapped in their homes due to the excessive amount of down trees, power poles and power lines.
Adults were having heat strokes and children were covered in heat rashes. People were hungry and thirsty beyond what most of us could imagine. No one in the Country even realized that many of the cities/counties were in trouble until a minimum of 1-2 weeks later, when phones were restored in the areas and the mayors were able to make phone calls pleading for assistance.
Many people were hospitalized (in Mississippi) due to Hurricane Katrina, and many people were killed due to Hurricane Katrina. Other than the storm itself, there were several instances where there were murders over bags of ice.
The situation in New Orleans, La. during Hurricane Katrina was devastating. The amount of people that decided to stay, and the amount of deaths is almost unbelievable.
But at the same time, we do not need to forget about the remainder of the state, and the surrounding states when present and future Hurricanes approach.
When individuals from nearby states are debating on evacuating, they will not get any information nor help from the Weather Channel.
If you do not get local news and weather , you may be up the creek without a paddle.

It’s about time someone has brought this out into the open. Yes, New Orleans suffered, but so did many, many other counties in Ms as well.
Thanks for such a good article and bringing this to light.
It is a shame that the media only cover the main area and others don’t receive any help due to their (the media) lack of compassion for their fellowmen or is it because they would not get the fame behind their name.
