The intense political war-of-the-words and economic ties between the two countries has brought India and Pakistan into a standstill with increased military tension.

Frustrated by non changing attitude of Pakistan sponsoring terrorism and failure of world leaders to put enough pressure, many Indians have started talking about an all out attack on Pakistan in order to dismantle and bring terrorist organizations ( ‘jihad groups’ ) to justice.

However they are failing to keep in mind the fact that Pakistan is a nuclear power like India. Even though it has lesser number of warheads it, it has sufficient capability to destroy all the major Indian cities. Its missiles have enough range to reach almost all major cities. India doesn’t have an effective missile defense system to defend herself from nuclear attacks. Most importantly, Pakistan has utilized billions of dollars of America’s fund and weapons meant for war-against-terror, for confrontation against India. War would be costly to both the sides.

Already the recession in USA has hampered the growth of Indian economy, which is one of the fastest growing economies of the world, war would bring additional burden. Pakistan has got nothing to lose as it is standing on the brink of bankruptcy.  Hence, India is forced to avoid direct confrontation with Pakistan.

The only option left for India is the diplomatic route. It can try bringing pressure on Pakistan with the help of other countries to crack down on the terrorist organizations. It should help America in securing the nuclear weapons of Pakistan from falling into wrong hands. Promoting democracy there will also help in making it more stable. After all India is the homeland of Mahatma Gandhi, a staunch supporter of non-violence.
