It was not long ago that the idea of a black American president was limited to T.V screens. 2008 has proved that it is a real possibility. But are we really ready?

A black president? A female president? A senior citizen? Whatever the choice, the 2008 presidential campaign showed the diversity that is America. If the statement land of opportunity needed justification, the campaign did that and then some.

For the first time, the campaign on both sides and in between was full of first timers, and now only one questions remains. Is America ready for a black president? Depending on the outcome of the presidential election, we might or might not know the answer to that question. However, one thing remains certain. When it comes to important decisions, race does not really matter. In the end, everyone just wants a president who will deliver. Personally, I want a president who will ensure that my college degree is good enough to get a job and save me from excessive blogging.

True, there are those who will cast their votes based on race, gender and religion, like the die-hard Clinton voters who have said they would rather not vote instead of vote for Obama. But for the most part, this campaign has turned out to be a good old fashioned campaign with the race factor almost a non-issue. This is the proof that the American society is ready for change, as long as it improves societal well-being.

Martin Luther king must be having a party. This is what he had envisioned. An America, where we are all one big family with normal arguments, instead of the segregation that marked his days. Whatever the outcome of the elections in November, we need to learn from this and move forward. This is America, and anything is possible.
