If African leaders would have been responsible, much would have been achieved.

The conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo reflect the leadership and development crisis in Africa, and foreigners’ presence to resolve them emphasizes this fact. African countries have been destabilized by boundary and territorial, ethnic, religious and civil wars, such conflicts originate from the control of national resources, politics, corruption and lack of accountability as well as poverty.

Political conflicts occur when people in power refuse to leave office when their term of office expires. Thus, the African Union needs to put more pressure on the rebels in eastern Congo to bring to halt the genocide and other crimes against humanity.

It is negligent of African leaders to overlook the conflicts as they are likely to spill over into other countries. It is time for Africa Union to show its capability of handling humanitarian crises across the continent.
