CNN lands on a church.
Back during the Dukakis campaign for president (has it been 20 years?!) the phrase “I’m a card-carrying member of the American Civil Liberties Union” came in vogue. I suppose that gave some people a sense of pride.
CNN descending on tiny Wasilla, Alaska, home of former mayor Sarah Palin, and on a tiny church she stopped attending years ago, makes me cringe. Are they there because of a raging reverend screaming that God should damn America? No. Did her ex-church crown some unsavory character such as racist and anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan with the Man of the Year title? No. Or maybe they preached that Alaskans had been targeted by the federal government for annihilation by injecting mercury into the caribou. No, not that either. I don’t know if Palin’s pastor has been a close friend, confidant or spiritual leader to her for the last 20 years, and frankly, since they he’s not preaching hate, I could care less. What bothers me immensely is CNN promoting the church hit piece by saying it’s a fundamentalist church, meaning they believe the Bible literally. Yeah, very interesting, perhaps to their latte drinking viewers. And why does this piece remind me of the ACLU phrase from 20 years ago? Because people of faith in this country, Christians, Jews and others, need to stand together in November, with voting card in hand, and say, “I’m a proud voter in America who will not stand for the media trying to scare me into voting for their chosen candidate!”
