The sad state of our country’s political situation as exemplified by the gentleman from Idaho.

When I see embattled Senator Larry Craig hold his Orwellian press conferences I am instantly reminded of the viral video of the poor dog that snarls and bites at its own leg. The Republicans, no longer satisfied with hating Others, have now decided to increasingly hate themselves. What would push a homosexual or, at the very least, someone unsure of their sexuality, to legislate against homosexuals at every opportunity?

Craig’s only option at the time of his undressing would have been to play the constituent card. In other words, “I have pursued the overwhelming sentiment of the good people of Idaho.” I don’t know any Idahoans (other than Napoleon Dynamite and Pedro) but I’d be willing to bet downtown Boise has no Provincetown/Castro type district. Simply responding to the needs of your electorate, while opportunistic, is forgivable compared to his current strategy.

What is that strategy? Craig, still stuck in the 1950’s certainly could not choose anything innovative. He’ll stick to the old standards: victim and denial, thank you very much. Orwell’s estate may wish to consider intellectual copyright infringement for Craig’s use of “wide stance”, “guilty”, and “resignation.” Apparently, Craig assigns meanings to words at his own leisure. How can you compete with that?

So now his Republican colleagues are forced to bash the basher or change the subject. Maybe Craig will toughen his stance on immigration and secure a deportation for Pedro. Instead, I’m betting a loud silence will prevail as they wait with baited tongue on the OJ trial.
