In prime time news tonight, NBC resorted to reporting on an “obese” baby who was denied individual insurance.

The Gerber baby syndrome went away a long time ago.  Pediatricians do watch the weight of a baby as it grows because it is indicative of its heath.  The baby in this report is, in fact, quite chubby.  The father (who happens to be a local news anchor) astonishingly asks if he is supposed to put his child on a diet.  Perhaps he should.  Perhaps the parents should be looking at what they are feeding their child.  Recent reports on cholesterol in children have shown shocking results. Obese infants have a higher chance of being obese adults. One must question if this is just a last ditch effort to gain support for the public option.  The piece is finished with words to that effect.  One also must wonder why the parents were looking for individual coverage for their baby.  Is the TV station the father works for carrying health care plans that do not cover children?  Do they not offer family coverage where the children are automatically accepted in their parents plan?  Or did the anchor in an attempt to gain attention, submit the application for his child to make a news story?
