While President Obama’s long awaited health care overall proposal finally on the table, senators are lined up to offer a bevy of contentious changes. Sen. Max Baucus the senate Finance Committee chairman’s bill is getting some Democrats to see plenty of room for improvement, and almost uniformly oppose measures from Republicans. The Republicans maybe loath to hand President Obama a victory on his biggest domestic priority, the rein in skyrocketing health care costs and extended coverage to many of the 50 million uninsured.
When health care negotiations in the senate were confirmed largely to Baucus in his private meetings with five other finance committee senators in trying craft a bipartisan deal without success, Baucus long awaited bill was altered Thursday, and more senators were in the mix, many had something to say.
“I can find a handful of things that trouble me,” said the senate’s no.2 Democrat, Dick Durbin of Illinois. Durbin cited a new tax on high value insurance plans that he and other Democrats fear could hit middle class workers.
A member of the finance committee said Baucus plan “needs more than just a few tweaks”. She wants stronger measures to control health care costs over a long term. Durbin added “For months, the debate over health care in the senate consisted of six”. Now, its been expanded.
