In this I look at the current events in the world and my personal opinion on what the world needs to do to become a better place.

Many new things have been proposed to the world in 2008 including new technologies, new systems of information and new governments. What have these brought to the metaphorical table of the world? Let’s take a better look at things as they happened this passing year. For those that have been living under a rock for the duration of their lives the US presidential election brought many new campaigners to the table. By the end of it the Democrats had found a leader in Barack Obama with his running mate Joe Biden.

If you were a Republican, you found a genuine leader in John McCain with his running mater Sarah Palin. If you were an independent, you probably just kept under that rock you had always been living under. Regardless of what party you supported, each candidate brought new ideas to the table in the first modern historical election in the post-Bush era of the USA. Obama, who would go on to win the election promised a wind of change, swearing to give medication to the ailing economy and make America a country that belonged at the top of the world stage again. While McCain did lose, he successfully steered himself very far away from any connection to the Bush government which was seen as political death to anyone who supported it.

What does this all mean to the average people like you and me though? Well, now more than ever, we need the US to be a strong and prosperous nation. With the emergence of China as a growing power in the East and some re-establishing by the new Russia with invasions in former Soviet held Georgia, democracy needs to be strong. Don’t misunderstand me here though. Despite the talk of Americans, I am and will always be a patriotic Canadian. Personally, I see the US being strong as democracy being strong. Realistically, Canada needs to be as strong as it can be too in times of economic woes. Things are slowly working however.

Canada has over the past few years started to actually reduce its federal government debt. This is more than the US is doing, as it is currently half a trillion dollars in debt to China alone. Things need to be done. We need to get back on our feet, and we need our governments to help. We need our governments to buy the bad mortgages that are floating around and also regulate factory construction. Why should we continue building auto factories and hiring people for jobs when we know that one day production will be at a stand still for these people. Things will get better, but we need to have hope and a stiff arm towards apathy. Change is necessary, and I believe that over the next 12 months we will see changes brought on by governments around the world. We are change.
