Despite the size of this angry little country and its angry little leader, North Korea is threatening military offensives in the way of preemptive nuclear strikes. Whether this is blatant disregard for humanity or due to fatal narcissism, it still poses a global threat.

Pyongyang and the rest of the political cronies of the area make no qualms about the lack of love and respect for their neighbors to the south. They even do not ague that they are having political issues with Japan. And of course, they enjoy picking the occasional fight against the United States as well as the United Nations who is deemed our right hand despite their inability to use common sense on our behalf during wartime.

The question will be debated until Pyonyang passes or a nuclear holocaust rains down on us, “Why?” The age of military strength enabling expansion of a nation or even the colonization of others nearby has passed. If there were any way to do this in this millennium, Great Britain would have figured out a way to return to their former glory. The motivations of North Korea must be considered Napoleon Syndrome. They want to be a superpower sixty years too late. Superpowers are no longer determined by nuclear capability.

As far as economic capabilities, that is the larger issue. In an era where the United States has to borrow plays from the socialism playbook to get through an economic crisis, all those other would-be enemies are seeing it as a point of weakness. While they are correct in their assumption, it is certainly not a door opening to World War III. Pyongyang must be stopped and the USA should not be the hand forced to fix the dilemma. Let the United Nations handle it, then form a coalition of Japan, South Korea, the Pacific islands, Australia and then China and Russia will have to hold court to save face.
