My views on the recent attacks of Britain’s security forces in Northern Ireland.

It is safe to say that I, along with nearly every other resident of this little Emerald Isle, was completely horrified by the recent attacks in the province. Two poor, young men gunned down in cold blood while they went to collect a pizza. Men who were serving their country. A respected police officer, only months from retirement, murdered as he answered a plea for help from a single mother. All three men died while trying to build a better future for not just themselves but for us all. To see that we are all disgusted you just need to turn on the TV and see footage of peace rallies, held to show solidarity from all backgrounds and sides of the community. We do not want to return to the past. We don’t want more bloodshed. This is our message.

What is this world coming to when a group of thugs try and derail a peace process that has been working for the people of Northern Ireland from all sides of the community? I for one cannot see the justice that these groups are trying to bring. What good do these murders bring? Shooting delivery men for taking a pizza to a soldier? Soldiers who were only hours away from leaving for Afghanistan, where again thay are trying to bring peace into this world. Some paying the ultimate sacrifice out there. I am sure that the parents of these young men were worried about them leaving for Afghanistan. Did they ever imagine that they would never even reach it?

These people need to give a thought to the fact that they are trying to fight a battle that ended in 1998. A 30 year battle coined ‘The Troubles’. Oh, and what troubles they were. Again, listen in, WE DO NOT WANT TO RETURN TO THE PAST. This is a message that Catholics and Protestants alike are united in.

I am filled with sadness at the loss of life, terror at thoughts of a return of the troubles, and rage that these terrorists think that they can hurt us. But more importantly, I am filled with defiance. We will unite, and we will say no. We will stand together, forming even stronger bonds, defying you the right to bring our wee country back into the past.

My condolances go out to the families of those murdered, both recently and at the height of the troubles.
