My thoughts on the implications of recent acts of Russia and Kyrgyzstan on the Obama presidency.
An agreement between the US, Poland, and the Czech Republic allowed for 10 long-range, ground-based missile defense interceptors in Poland, and mid-course radar in the Czech Republic. This system would come in handy if Iran or any other nuclear power in the area wanted to send nuclear missiles at US allies or the US herself. I think that in this increasingly complicated world America has to act keeping in mind that some of the attitudes and rules have changed.
Russian leader stopped deployment of troops. The reason that was given was because Mr. Obama had insinuated that the he was not going to pursue the missile defense agreement the Bush administration had arranged with Poland and the Czech Republic. However, this week Kyrgyzstan revoked the US access to its airbase. The news is reporting that the Kyrgyzstan action was due to receiving a 1 billion dollar loan from Russia.
Now, Mr Obama attempted to deliver an impression of a new tone in the US. I will paraphrase his statement of if you will unclench your fist we will offer a hand. The implication is one of working together with respect and friendship if these nations would stop their violent aggressive acts.
So far, Iran has unclenched its fist to slap Obama upside the head with recriminations of past American acts. Russia first gave a conciliatory tone and then bribed an American business partner to close of access to one of their bases critical to operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
It appears that my fears are coming true. All through out the campaign of 2008 my harshest criticism of Mr. Obama were that he did not understand the free market economic system and that his attitudes about foreign relations were fantastical and naïve. This week Mr. Obama chastised CEOs for their bonuses during harsh economic times. It is my opinion that even though these execs are receiving public money the relationship between government and business is one of working towards success. I am sure these bonuses had already been promised because of previous performance and not based on forecasting future performance. Yet Mr. Obama thinks it is okay to give impression government is not fully dedicated to the proposition of success.
The most troubling part of Mr. Obama is how he thinks foreign leaders do not have any ulterior motives. I have been alive long enough to know that most leaders of nations are only out for themselves. The goal is to make as much personal money as possible. Some leaders even resort to immoral acts and immoral association like the one with Kyrgyzstan and Russia. Okay, Kyrgyzstan needed money. That is okay. However, why enter in to an agreement for a loan when the prerequisite is punitive towards the US. I suspect it is because Russia wants free reign to manipulate other nations in her region, even if it requires brute force.
Obama is sitting in the seat of inexperience and unreliability. The US had an agreement with Poland and Czech Republic. Because of his naïve, nature Mr. Obama has now compromised American security and the security of two allies. Poland and the Czech Republic are close enough to Russia to smell the communist after-shave of the past. With out the missile, defense system in these countries the US is no less capable of stopping a nuclear attack from Iran or any other nation.
Mutually assured destruction used to work wonders in deterrence. However, we know Mr. Obama has talked about nuclear disarmament. I remember hearing him say that it would be good if there were no nuclear weapons in the world.
The problem here of course is trust. Mr. Obama tried to forge new friendships with his unclench your fist statement and he has been greeted with harsh words from Iran and interference from Russia in American foreign policy. I do not believe that the Kyrgyzstan president, Putin, and/or the Iranian leader acted because they believe they have the moral high ground. In my opinions, their actions were just out of greed.
This is our world today. It is okay if it will make you money. This is why I say there are no more allies, just business partners. It would be in Obama’s best interest to become schooled in the subject of deception.
Leaders of nations will always attempt to get what they want while appearing to give something in return. In the complicated world of foreign diplomacy one has to be as Christ put it” … as wise as serpents and as docile as doves”.
