An article examining the anti-life agenda of the Obama administration to date.

After the first fifty days of the Obama administration, it seems superfluous to state that he is adamantly pro-abortion (aka “pro-choice”). In fact, this should not be a mystery to anyone who was simply paying attention during the campaign. Obama’s legislative record was very clear, both in the Illinois legislature and in the U.S. Senate. One prominent example was when State Senator Obama voted against a bill that would have made the killing of an infant who happened to survive an attempted abortion illegal in Illinois.

During the campaign Obama did nothing to indicate that he would be anything but a devoted friend of the so-called “choice” crowd. He virtually promised Planned Parenthood his undying devotion in exchange for their support.

Then, upon inauguration, his first legislative act was to repeal, via executive order, the “Mexico City” policy first instituted by President Reagan. This policy forbade the use of American taxpayer dollars to fund any organization which promoted, counseled for, or recommended abortion overseas. In other words, the U.S. was effectively kept out of the worldwide abortion trade by this policy. That is, until President Obama got into office. He made sure that was priority one. It was a task that had to be accomplished before energy independence, before health care reform, before education reform, before preventing terrorism, before the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and before the economy! Take careful note of that fact folks. The economy was the absolute number one issue in the election and the Obama campaign. Their rhetoric simply gushed over with how they were going to fix this economy and get people back to work. However, it seems very likely that president Obama has begun to think (unless of course he has always thought this) that the most important change he can bring about is a legal change making abortions far more accessible all the while protesting that he wants to make them “rare.”

He gives us all proof of this with three more recent moves. First, by executive order he has removed all restrictions on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. This is despite the fact that all research done with embryonic stem calls has proved completely fruitless for more than two decades. The facts are clear that not one single successful treatment has been accomplished with the use of embryonic stem cells and none is on the horizon. On the other hand, there have been a multitude of successful treatments accomplished with the use of stem cells from adults, umbilical cord blood and other ethical sources. Unlike embryonic stem cells, these sources of stem cells do not involve the killing of a human being at the earliest stage of life development. Yet it is the embryonic source that our president chooses to allow federal funding to support.

The second move is to repeal, again through executive order, the Provider’s Conscience Clause. According to Bill Donahoe, president of the Catholic League, this particular rule allows that “no one in the health care field can be compelled by law to perform or assist in a procedure that violates his or her conscience.” This regulation could apply to any procedure, but has particular relevance to such procedures as abortion or physician assisted suicide. The Bush Administration put this provision in place to strengthen existing laws and make it far more difficult for physicians and other health care workers to be forced to violate their conscience. Obama has proposed scrapping the provision and its rules altogether.

The third move has been to nominate Governor Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas to become the Secretary of Health and Human Services. If there is a more pro-abortion politician out there, I certainly can’t name him or her. LifeNews.com reports that “Sebelius has been accurately pegged as a hard-core abortion advocate by pro-life groups (because of) her close relationship to late-term abortion practitioner George Tiller, her repeated vetoes of any legislation to limit or reduce abortions and her numerous pro-abortion appointments…”

As I write, there continues to be more and more evidence piling up in the form of executive orders and various appointments that President Obama is truly obsessed with driving an anti-life agenda while he is president. It seems as though anyone who is pro-life in any way had better soon be prepared to follow one of two courses of action. One is to give in to the seemingly crushing weight of the pro-death juggernaut unleashed by this administration. I personally find that alternative both distasteful and cowardly. The other is to realize that the juggernaut is really a Halloween costume covering a impotent imp. Though the forces of the world may be arrayed against us, we need to see not that God is on our side, but that in this battle we are on His side. Let us act as faithful warriors in His host, utilizing the spiritual armor through the power of prayer, as noted in Ephesians 6, and the enemy will be naught but a vapor in the wind.
