Most working people will readily admit that they despise the current welfare system. In all surveys that are conducted among the working class it is felt that the welfare benefits should be immediately stopped. Unfortunately most people feel that if someone can not work due to their physical limitations or to an illness they should be provided social security. Folks this is certainly not the right approach to resolve this dilemma.
I fully agree about placing a halt upon the welfare system but don’t transfer the worthless assets to the social security system.
Regrettably more and more Americans are relying upon social security even though they have never contributed to it. This is going to be the SSI downfall. The system was not established to support the outsiders who want to partake of it but has never managed to work a day in their life towards putting funds into SSI.
Far too many people have the mistaken notion that if they are unable to work then social security will take care of them. Think for a moment about those people who were born with mental or physical handicaps and begin receiving SSI at an early age even though they are not officially part of the system.
Now on the other hand let’s consider those of us who have worked for untold years contributing weekly or monthly to the fund in the hopes of a future portion being returned to us at our retirement age. Are we to believe that the right thing to do is to share these funds with those who have not contributed?
This simply doesn’t sound right does it? However this is exactly what our government does each and every day. It is no wonder that the SSI system is quickly going bankrupt. There can not be enough money in it to support everyone in the nation unless those people help build up the equity of the fund. I could sit here and relate at least a dozen names of associates that I know who are basically bleeding the system of your money and mine. These people have never worked and more then likely never will. Why should they? Our unfair system encourages actions of this nature. Our system cannot sustain these abuses much longer.
Our SS system has basically been robbed by the people who we placed in government positions to take care of our interests. Now we have encountered a double problem in that many of our lawmakers support the premise that the illegals should also get a portion of the social security pie even though they have never contributed to the fund.
Don’t misunderstand me as I feel for those people who are honestly unable to work but we have to start going back to the basics again. Let the non-profits and the churches once again take care of those who are unable to fend for themselves. Let’s get back to those old time family values were the children take care of the elderly parents. This current problem was created by the upper management of our country many years ago. It was an easy way to provide funds for people by robbing the SSI accounts to fund other uses.
Now we have come to the point where it can not continue much longer. Either way we go we will likely witness a complete breakdown of our infrastructure. One of the biggest things that can help in this situation is to bring back the jobs to the American economy while applying extremely stiff tariffs on imports arriving from foreign ports. In this manner the process of a free market would naturally take up some of the slack from those who are currently unemployed and transfer them to a working force.
This problem can only be changed if we take the bull by the horns and flip it over. We may not be in a public office where we can initiate the needed changes but we placed those people in these positions and we owe it to ourselves as well as our future generations to get the politicians back on the right track. If their job is at stake perhaps they will start to do the right thing.

I totally disagree with your article. There are people out there who have a severe disability that enables them to go to work. They nee to be on disability.
C.M. Markus you are absolutely correct assuming that they have contributed to the Social security fund otherwise they should be finding assistance elsewhere.
Joseph, I have to agree. If these people out in the world today get a broken hand or a sprained ankle, get a quick doctors note from their family friend and doctor, they are able to collect help from our government and my generation will have nothing left when we are ready to retire. I don’t think these people should be able to collect the money if they truly are not disabled nor have paid into Social Security
Hello,
) I see your point. I have my point, too. And I understand where you may be coming from. It would be nice if some of us who are on disability would not be slammed. I am going to college now, and am still sick, so it is a huge struggle, but I want to get back out there and earn again, as I do not get retirement at all and will get pennies, as I do now, forever, and I hate being disabled and having no money. Sometimes, I do not even know how I will get a gallon of milk, or a gallon of gas, and I hate it. I am sorry if people think that I am party to them paying for me. I just do not see how you all are paying for my income, which is not much by the way, when I worked and I paid into all of these programs that otherwise I would not have qualified for if I had not worked. No one can get any money unless they worked enough and earned the credits possible for this. It took me five years to prove my illnesses, so I didn’t just go and get a doctor’s note. I knew I could not work and I kept fighting while my boyfriend paid all the bills for five years, and no I did not get any retro. So, it is not all roses for some of us and I really wanted for others to see some people’s side of this as well. I wish I could work. Great article and this will be a debate with many. The main point is that we are all people with feelings and God loves us all and none of us is superior over another, nor are we in a Judge’s position. What if someone in your family fell on their head and got a brain injury? God forbid that would happen, but think about it. No one knows if they may slip and fall, or may be in an accident at any time in their life, and they may need help. Having a brain injury is one of the worst things to go through, but most people can make it and learn to live, but it changes someone’s life forever. It is sad, but true. They are never the same and can only do so much. I would like people to really think about others, is all. I have learned to see the other side, but, unfortunately, some people can only see their own side and that is so sad, too. God bless!
I worked for many years and I got sick and cannot work. I earned credits and I paid into SS for several years, so as far as I am concerned, I paid for my SSI and SSDI. When people work, they pay, every week, for everything that you discuss. I think there are much worse things that the Government is doing with money, and I do not believe that money will run out for those who retire. Also, there are other ways that one can plan for retirement, if they are worried. Like estate insurance and other retirement plans.
Maryanne, don’t misunderstand me as I fully support those people who have worked and contributed to the overall program. They should be allowed to collect during times of major illnesses. After all that is what it is there for. My major complaint is those people who have never contributed as much as a dime towards the fund. You are so right in that our government is wasting our money and before long we will not be able to see a penny of it at retirement age.
I in no way meant any derogatory remarks towards those people on disability that have paid their dues so to speak. My main gripe was for the ones who have paid nothing and manage to have the system support them. I known many people who really deserve the social security benefits and like you they have to fight tooth and nail to get the meager sums that they do.
In your case I would not in the least be concerned with what people may think as far as you collecting your earned money. It is rightfully due to you at this time. I commend you for your initiate and self respect in wanting to return to work again.
You mentioned about possibly someone in my family falling on their head and having brain injury. Well it is my duty to look after that person. If it is my wife then she has contributed to the program and in turn will receive monthly amounts to help offset the expenses. The same with my adult children. My grandson on the other hand has never worked and to me would be solely my responsibility (he lives with me). Since he has not worked and paid SSI I would not expect that he would be taking money from those that have made their contributions.
Incidentally, I would like to thank you for the kind remarks concerning my writing. Good luck in your return to work after you complete your schooling. We need more people with the will power that you display.
