How does the US deal with this old but continuing issue? Our country gives us the freedom to practice any religion we so choose, so is polygamy a religion? Many people sleep with more than one person at a time the same as a polygamist.

Today one of the biggest stories is polygamy and the cults that are located between Canada and Mexico. The estimate of people who practice polygamy is over 40,000. Many of us think this is out religious and unheard of. We want to criticize and belittle these people for their beliefs and the way they live. My question has to be “If one in five people cheat on their spouse, how much can we criticize others for openly committing the same acts?” The United States is base on one document and everyone who lives here is under the presumptions that we have to follow that document, The Constitution of America. Could Polygamist be held under this document? How will it affect them and the children they lost?

I agree that cults may not have the ideal ways of life but why should we be more judgmental over them than we are about all of the other cultures that reside within this country? We allow another group to live and thrive in our society without question even though they live with just as many out religious practices; the Amish community is not only accepted but supported by us. We don’t criticize the way the Jewish and Muslims choose to live but we are targeting this one culture. Are we being to judgmental? Should we be stepping back and taking a deeper look into how they live before we start judging them?

The next factor that will be brought into this story will be how our forefathers created our country on the basis of “Freedom of Religion and Freedom of Speech.” Thought time Polygamy has been considered a religion within itself, not one that we all agree with but one just the same. Do those people have the right to live how they wish? Do they have the right to say what they wish? In accordance to The Constitution of America they do. This means that we don’t have the right to judge and punish them based on their religion. Polygamists have rights just like the rest of the Americans who choose to live here.

While I believe Polygamist should have the right to live and practice their religious ways as they choose, I also believe that they should also respect and honor their children the same ways that all Americans are required to do! No one should be allowed to force a child to marry or have sexual relations without their full consent. There is no excuse for child abuse and anyone that has committed any form of child abuse should be punished as hard and fast as possible. We as a nation are responsible for our children and we need to put them above all else but do we put them above our Constitution? I say yes, they are that important.
