The people of Palestine elected Hamas to represent them. The Americans and the Israelis supported president Abbas so that they could buy a sweetheart deal from him. Hamas won. Israel and USA are having a hard time recognizing ground reality. This in not new. The Americans did not know that the Viet Cong had arrived in Saigon until their tanks were knocking on the doors of the American embassy to evacuate.
Great News (or is it?): President Mahmoud Abbas has sworn in a new cabinet
It is great to hear that president Mahmoud Abbas will be president of the Palestinian People for another term. The irony of the situation is that he does not command a majority or has popular support. Yes, the Americans have agreed to lift their embargo. Sure it will be a morale boost to an ailing and nearly dead president.
Surely the Israelis would love to support him in the name of “true democracy” American Style. Approved by the Government of Israel. However, ground reality is that this effort will result in more blood shed. It is clear that Hamas has the physical power and authority. Hamas also has popular support. Sure, this is a pain to the Americans and Israelis.
Americans will always support “puppet governments” for short term, economic and political gains. They did this in Viet Nam and Chile. They are doing this in Poland, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Somehow, democracy to the Americans means “supporting the minority” which may be in the form of President Pinochet or President Musharraf. Neither of the ever held majorities or even held the resemblance of majority support.
No amount of Israeli or American people will prevent the people of the Palestine from achieving their goals of a true democracy. Not democracy as defined by President Bush or President Olmert. They were not elected by majorities and have very little understanding of true democracy. Sure they understand and have an in depth understanding of population manipulation, deceit and governing by dividing the masses.
The Americans know that Hamas seized control of Gaza last week. They know that Abbas has been routed. The only reason for the Americans to support Abbas is because he is more willing to be an Israeli puppet to concede more to Israel. The Americans and Israelis can control who is in power by playing politics but they cannot determine who wins. The final winners were the people of Chile and the people of Viet Nam. The foreign policy of America is flawed and will remain flawed.
It is true to say that the Hamas movement is poor and is made up of impoverished people. However, it must be stated that these people are more motivated so succeed than the power brokers sitting in Washington and Tel Aviv. These people are as motivated as the people of South Vietnam and Chile.
The recent violence has left the impoverished coastal strip increasingly isolated and the situation is likely to get worse for all the parties involved – U.S., Israel, and the Europeans. All need to understand the rule of majority and look for “win win” situations. The American and Israeli support for a minority government ignores ground reality.
The people who vote for Hamas expressed their desire to see Hamas in power. The sad fact is that America and Israel choose to recognize President Abbas who the loser of the elections. Blood shed will be the end result. This will only end when America and Israel recognize that the ordinary people have supported Hamas. Period.

It has reached the point where i no longer care. Both Hamas and Fatah are terrorist organizations so the decision of which party or leader wins is like choosing between a king Cobra and an Anaconda as a housepet.
I can relate with your frustration and underlying feelings of dealing with a difficult situation. It is not a win win situation. It is more like a lose lose situation. There is lack of respect for each others view, and there is no tolerence.
The letting of blood continues. Both parties are using the poor to further their own goals.
President Abbas has been elected by the people.
So has been President Bush. Legitimacy comes from honesty, integrity and true representation. Not from the barrel of a gun.
Dear Lionessofgd,
I was delighted to read your comments. I was delighted to read your assumptions. I am not European though I lived in Europe for 10 years. I am not American though I live there for six years.
If you seek, you will find.
Bye for now.
Shergill
This is a well thought out and well written article, with lots of valid points raised.
Good Day Anne,
Thank You for your comments. Great to hear from you. How do you manage to publish so much?
This article is leftist BS. Nowhere mentioned in this article is Hamas’s public refusal to recognize Israel’s right to exist. This author really needs to look at Hamas’s charter. The US and Israel support Abbas because they believe that he recognizes Israel’s right to exist and seeks peace with Israel. Even when Hamas seems to say something more conciliatory, that group usually denies they said it. Hamas was offered to recognize Israel’s right to exist, denounce terrorism and honor previous agreements and then negotiations will begin. Hamas said no. Hamas is preparing for the next round of terrorism with Israel. Israel’s security fence is what’s preventing the suicide bombings. The author Shergill is right about one thing supporting Abbas is a mistake because he and his organization Fatah also refuse to recognize Israel’s right to exist. They view their “peace” with Israel as a way to escalate terrorism and gain the advantage in their terrorist war with Israel. Shergill is a supporter of America’s totalitarian enemies and is taking the side of tyranny in the global struggle between tyranny and freedom. He is sounding like a useful idiot to our totalitarian enemies. Also, Hamas doesn’t want democracy. It wants an expansionist Islamist state to replace Israel that’ll be like Iran, Sudan or Afghanistan under the Taliban. Also, this author should look up the atrocities of North Vietnam and what Chile was like under Allende. Neither of them were democratic. As for Allende being dmeocratically elected, so was Hitler, with more of the vote.
Peter Hakim hit the nail. He’s dead right. Both Hamas and Fatah are terrorist groups. Both reject Israel’s right to exist. Fatah is just more manipulative. Al Aqsa Martys Brigades is part of Fatah and commit terrorist attacks for Fatah while Fatah pretends to want peace with Israel. In the territories, both propaganda controlled by Hamas and Fatah call for Israel’s destruction and present suicide bombers as religious holy warriors and as heroic shahids.
