Since 2009 began more deaths have occurred in Afghanistan. There are now 38,000 troops serving there and President Obamas plan is to send in 17,000 more. He also plans on using insurgents to help us in this fight. This will help a great deal to hold back the Taliban forces.
In the first two months of 2009 there have been twenty nine US troops killed. The reason they say for this is that in 2008 there were 27,000 troops in Afghanistan and now there is only 17,000. US troops are also operating in more dangerous parts of this country, which is another reason for the influx of deaths.
Pressure from our US troops was maintained through out the winter months which also is why we saw the increase in the death toll.
One third of the deaths were caused by roadside bombs. The insurgents are using more IEDS because more of them would die if they faced US troops head on. It has been said that the Taliban militants are very resilient but not necessarily stronger.
General David McKiernan, the top U.S. and NATO commander in the country, said he is not going to be pessimistic of 2009, but will instead say he feels the glass is half full. Militant deaths have also increased with a total of 308 in 2009 so far.
Civilian deaths are also up according to despite the pleas from the Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Last year the Taliban set off big bombs which killed 180 civilians and Us death toll for civilians was 10.
This year it has been reversed and US troops have killed 100 so far.
Will this ever be over? Will the fight that has raged in the middle East ever be silenced and the fighting removed from this place?
How many have to give their lives? How many more have to suffer from all of this? Hopefully with the New Presidents strategies soon we will have peace.

Thanks for the read.A thought provoking piece.
Great peice. Interesting thoughts.
Hopefully, but don’t count on it. Great article!
A very provoking piece indeed, I have got to say I wouldnt mind researching a similar piece from over here in the UK to see what the numbers are like, just a quick point – IED? Improvised Explosive Device? Just not a term used very often over here xxx
Interesting and provocative. I just hope things will be sorted out.
Kirstyanne..IEDs are what our troops are taught here in the USA. They are our worst nightmare!!!!
Interesting, there are fatalities within the UK forces in 2009 too. Sad days for all.
Hope peace returns to this world.
that should be a great idea if it will definitely pushes through.
hate it when the world has to go all violent! Makes me feel unsafe!
Thanks for the article!
Great article — let’s hope this works!
I`m with you in hoping that this war ends sooner..
Thanks. Afghanistan is trickier than Iraq in many ways because it is so divided. And when we took our attention off it we let it slide…
Hopefully the additional attention will help. I am also given to understand that President Obama is reversing Bush’s policy on not allowing experts in the local culture into the war zone. Is that true? (I read it in a blog…)
Regards,
Inna
hope this will work and will be over soon, the photo of that dog is cool…
Thanks for sharing.
very difficult – you put it well, revivor
These are indeed difficult times. You have expressed it so well, thanks, Linda.
Thanks for sharing this Linda.
Interesting article..I didn’t had that indepth knowledge abt it so far.
Very well presented!
However, I wouldnt count on peace in the Middle East any time soon. Too many people there view democracy as the antichrist, and will do anything in their power to destroy all democracy from the world. They beleive it is only then that the end of days will come. Ironic that Christanity teaches much the opposite-peace there, but with the same result.
I agree it would be nice for the war to end! You did an excellent job!:)
well, goodluck to them! Thought provoking piece!
Could be a while yet before peace is restored there Linda.
Nice work.

NO ONE HAS EVER BEEN ABLE TO FULLY CONQUER AND CONTROL AFGANISTAN—NOT EVEN THE USSR IN THE 80′S. YOU EITHER HAVE TO PROSECUTE THE WAR TO THE FURTHEST DEGREE—BY SENDING EVERY POSSIBLE SOLDIER AVAILABLE—INCLUDING OTHER NATO COUNTRIES OTHER THAN BRITAIN AND THE U.S.(WHO’S TROOPS ARE THERE BUT NOT AT THE SHARP END OF THE CONFLICT) OR QUITE SIMPLY GET OUT ALL TOGETHER. TRYING TO FIGHT THIS CONFLICT WITH A SKELETON FORCE JUST MEANS MORE DEATHS WITH NO RESOLUTION—THAT WILL DRAG ON AND ON.
Thought provoking article, I truly hope it works.
I truly liked your article which was very thought-provoking to say the least. I am glad that President Obama is giving Afganistan more attention than Bush ever did but I do think winning this one will be extremely difficult.
President Obama is definitely in my prayers because I think his heart is in the right place but having to come up with ideas and strategies that will be approved and backed by the ‘Political Know-it-alls’ in Washington, D.C., is certainly not going to be easy to do!
