If you are rich, powerful and as good looking as Mr. Silvio at his age, you will find it difficult to repel beautiful women who throng around you, because in the business of managing power, women are irresistible ingredients.

I have always known Prime Minister Berlusconi as a truly honorable man who resonates with the Italian people so powerfully that he was able to make history as one of the few Italian leaders who has been elected as Prime Minister 3 grand times. It is a well-known fact that he is handsome and rich, infact; he is so rich that he could be one of the 15 top richest people on earth. But power and wealth, unfortunately also go with women and sex. The most powerful men are inseparable from their undying desire for beautiful women and it doesn’t really matter whether these women are minors or not. On the other hand, let us not forget that sometmes, beautiful women use their charm to do selective seduction of the rich and powerful. In this case, it becomes very difficult to seperate the culprit from the victim.

News is doing the rounds that Berlusconi’s wife whom he married 19 years ago is seriously engaged in the paper works for immediate divorce and the reason put forward for the divorce is that Mr. Berlusconi consorts with many women including minors. This thirst for a divorce was partly sparked off by the recent press reports that Prime Minister Berlusconi was seen as Guest of Honor at a birthday party of a young teenage girl who was celebrating her 18th birthday.

Many commentators found this act distasteful at this time for many reasons. Firstly, Italy is in a recession and what great leaders of a nation as powerful as Italy are expected to be doing at such a time is not to be carousing with youngsters but to be debating the best way forward in dealing with the recession.  Secondly, Mr. Berlusconi is 72 and this teenage girl is only 18. The two do not offer a decent social consortium given the gaping age difference of 54 years. Consorting with many women is not a very unusual happening to the rich and powerful. The King of Swaziland replenishes his stock of virgin wives almost every year in a royal ritual and most of these young girls are usually under 18. So the age factor from the African perspective is not really a problem. What amazes me abit is the fact that this case has not raised a political Tsunami for the Prime Minster until this day. This leaves me wondering what kind of moral issues injuriously touch the feelings of the Italian political leaders and the Public at large?

We all recall that when Bill Clinton made an inappropriate move on Monica Lewinsky, he was made to face the courts and defend himself as far as the courts of the American Public Opinion. He was arraigned before congress for impeachment which  showed just how big a check the American system has on the excesses of people in power.  I think the Italian political class, especially the opposition need to go for seminar classes to learn how turn the misdemeanours of leaders in power into political capital otherwise, this was a scandal that should have caused heads to roll politically.

About the divorce, well I think women of the richest and most powerful men are also some of the unhappiest wives in the world. Sometimes living with powerful men means having all that money can buy but not love necessarily. I see this glaringly in the marriage of Mrs. Berlusconi. He has a terribly weak spot for beautiful women and he is not just an exception-all men have the propensity to be weak on such issues especially if they wield power and money like Silvio does. I learnt recently that  he even made some appointments of a young lady into a political office Incharge of the  EU based on emotions rather than pure merit. The lady was charming and he had the audacity to say it loud to the world that he would have married her immediately had he not been a married man already! The truth is, the world knows one and only Mrs. Berlusconi-she neednt disturb her peace because if she wants to be associated with power, no man can brush it onto her except Mr. Silvio Berlusconi!
