I never have understood why extreme beliefs seem to always coincide with hypocrisy. Abortion is a perfect example.

This weekend, Dr. George Tiller, a Kansas abortion doctor, was gunned down while serving as an usher at his church. The motive for the shooting is unclear at this time, but it can only be assumed that Mr. Tiller’s death is related to the fact that he operated one of only three abortion clinics that perform late term abortions (21 plus weeks.)

Of course, this is just the latest incident in over two decades worth of extreme violent acts/threats like assignations, bombings, arsons, etc.. on abortion clinics, staff, and doctors. Then, there are the milder violent acts/threats such as: protesters throwing blood on patients and staff as they leave the abortion clinics, vandalizing abortion clinic property, intimidation and harassment of patients and staff, etc..

I am not an abortion advocate. In fact, I am actually personally morally opposed to it. I do feel that there are certain cases where I would find it morally acceptable such as: rape, incest, and when the mothers life is at risk. But, that is my personal opinion. Fact is that abortion is legal. Just because I am morally opposed to it, does not mean that the majority of our society agrees with me, and my moral opposition does not give me right to flout abortion law. This is the United States of America, we have our right to be morally opposed to something. We have the right to speak our opposition, but we do not have the right to force our beliefs on others, especially with the use of violence. If you do not agree with abortion, then work to change the laws….not murder and vandalize.

There is also much hypocrisy in what these extreme pro-life advocates are willing to do in the name of preserving life. I must wonder if the people willing to kill abortionist and patients have ever stopped to think that they are trying to preserve life by taking life? That is the most nonsensical approach that I could ever think of. Even the nonviolent methods are often hypocritical. Somehow just because the abortionist or patient is considered to be doing something “wrong,” it makes it okay to berate and abuse them. If the situation were reversed and abortion was illegal, I doubt that it would be tolerated for someone seeking to have an abortion to throw blood all over the Catholic priest that they feel is doing something “wrong.”

In conclusion, these attacks must stop. If pro-life advocates ever hope to get their point across and make a change, then they need to stop trying to use loss of life to save life. Try reaching out with a sane voice of reason to debate the issue… without violence.
