President Obama Bowed to the Emperor of Japan this past week as a token of
respect to the culture of one of our now most reliable allies. Ex-President Bush showed a lot of similar respect for the Saudia Arabia King without so much hullabaloo.

Right-wingers are making a big to-do about Obama

bowing to Japanese Emperor Ahikito. Fox News, the right wing

channel that criticizes everything the president does was

fully active on the issue. Since we knew that Fox would

be there to discolor the moment there’s hardly any news there.

The administration defended the act by saying that Obama

was only “observing protocol” in the way it has gone on for centuries

with the Japanese emperor. They also say that it would enhance

both the position and our status relative to Japan. In Japan,

a bow is about equivalent to a handshake.

Obama bashers consider anything the president does is fair

game for criticism. But it is pretty apparent now that we live in

a global society which means that we should give some weight

to the customs of other cultures. It inspires a better attitude

toward our nation.

The gesture shows good manners and respect. And maybe we

should say that the world has more respect for this administration

and this country now as opposed to the bumbling leadership we

endured for the previous eight years.
