On November 4th, 2008, Proposition eight in California was voted on, which effectively banned gay marriage for the state. What are the biggest reasons for a same-sex marriage ban? Why should same-sex couples be allowed (or not) to get married?

Proposition 8 was a measure on the ballot for the 2008 Presidential election in California. This proposition served the purpose of banning same-sex marriage for the state of California. I have a few questions I am interested in hearing feedback for:

- Why (or why not) gay marriage?

- Are civil unions or other marriage “equivalents” fair substitutes for same-sex couples?

- What needs to happen for same-sex marriage to exist in the U.S.?

- Sex Discrimination (Scenario): Two men walk into a courthouse–the first man wishes to apply for a marriage certificate for him self and his fiance, the second man wishes to apply for a marriage certificate for him self and his fiance, also. The first man applies for and is issued a marriage certificate for him self and his wife. The second man is denied a marriage certificate because marriage is defined as between a man and a woman.

If marriage is a legal status recognized at the local, state, and federal levels, but the legal status requires two people of the opposite sex, how is this not discrimination on the basis of sex?
