Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin, in her interview with ABC’s Charlie Gibson on Thursday (Sept. 11) was asked if she agreed with the “Bush Doctrine.” She questioned Charlie for clarification.
GIBSON: “The Bush doctrine, as I understand it, is that we have the right of anticipatory self-defense, that we have the right to a preemptive strike against any other country that we think is going to attack us. Do you agree with that?
GIBSON: Do we have a right to anticipatory self-defense? Do we have a right to make a preemptive strike again another country if we feel that country might strike us?
PALIN: Charlie, if there is legitimate and enough intelligence that tells us that a strike is imminent against American people, we have every right to defend our country. In fact, the president has the obligation, the duty to defend.
She did not spout out the definition of the Bush doctrine as Charlie and many liberals preach, but she demonstrated strength and conviction. The way the world is today with evil nations and terrorists bent on destroying Americans, her answer is much better than knowing the definition of a liberal concept.
Americans better wake up and realize how vulnerable we are to attacks. There is this liberal idea that talking to our enemies who hate America is the answer to secure our freedom. Listen, this is very naïve. I have been in battles and in war, and to think you can sooth the enemy is foolish. Sarah Palin may not be the typical politician who can be pushed to a certain agenda, but she is real and seems to have the courage to push back where ever necessary. Many may not remember the President Carter’s days in office. He was weak when standing up against our enemies and consequently, America lost a lot of credibility throughout the world and we were a nation of embarrassment.
The term “Bush Doctrine” is no more than a liberal media spin. Liberals immerse themselves with such liberal jargon, but others may not pay much attention to such liberal categorization of policy or intentions. I am quite educated and even I may have had to think about Charlie Gibson’s snobbish question as he peered down at Sarah Palin with his glasses hanging on the tip of his nose as if he was such an intelligent Journalist “interrogating” a little ole housewife. At least she engaged her mind before her mouth before answering. Just because she didn’t glibly spout out the “desired” answer to such a question, does not mean she is unintelligent and unaware of the crucial events of the day. In fact, I think she should be given credit for asking questions, that’s what unpretentious people do.
One of the biggest problems with government today is that we are being governed by rich and often elitist politicians who are self absorbed and will do anything to keep their position in government. The president is one person. Yes, he/she has the veto power and influence, but congress also has the veto power and a great deal of influence. I thought our government was “by the people, for the people,” not “by the rich, elitist, for the common people.” Most people in our country are not privileged to be rich and Washington groomed and/or polished.
Sarah Palin may not be the ordinary “yes” politician, but at this time, she desires to help change government to the values upon which it was founded. I think she should be applauded for standing her ground and not bending to the whims of those who disagree with her; liberals and “follow the crowd” bunch are trying so hard to trash her. Her courage to be a real American and willing to fight for decency and security is refreshing and honorable.

Before I get comments arguing that congress does not have the veto power, let me clarify what I meant. As we all learned in Civics classes, the United States constituion mandates Congress Oversight powers. Both houses with a two-thirds majority of those present can override a president’s veto.
About your comment on the congress and their veto power, isn’t it funny that the people always forget that when they are blaming the President for everything that is wrong in Washington. Great article by the way. I for one loved it.

Maybe you were watching a different “Sarah Palin” than the whole wide world was because the one the world saw was slow to answer unresponsive to the most simple questions. A woman that is against abortion in all cases even “rape” or “incest” and shoots and kills Gods creatures is no future president. Now you talked about “Barrack Obamas” faith but you failed to mention that “Sarah” believed that the global warming is made-up! she refused to even share her faith at first. Lets not talk about the money her and her family spent! grow up and see things for what they truly are!
you sound like a bitter old man who is mad at the country. you sound like a complete racist to me! you hate the “Muslims” and you accuse “Barack” of being one. I think this is just your bogus way to color the fact that he’s black and that’s your real reason for not liking him. Blaim it all on the “Muslims” because of the war.
Thank you for your opinion. That’s what’s good about this country. We can freely differ in our opinions. I will not argue because it will not change anything. You are as firm with your opinions, as I am with mine. First of all, I am not racist. I do not care the color or gender of the person who could be our president, if they are qualified and can do the job. There just has been too much suspicion and mystery about Obama and that scares me. I love my country and have fought for our freedom and way of life; I don’t want to lose it. I also know alot about the “Daley, Chicago Political Machine.” If you know anything about it, you would be a little leery, also. If Obama does not surprise us, I will accept him as my president.
Secondly, I believe the Muslim’s religion, Islam, has been used by many Islamic radicals in their Jihad against the West. I do not believe all Muslims want to fight and kill Westerners. I believe most of them are humble and peace-loving.
Thirdly, I believe Sarah Palin is “the real thing” because she has not tried to hide her views and opinions. You may not agree with her opinions, but that does not make her any less real. Politicions are often pretentious and sneaky. Her appeal is that she is willing to speak her mind – and not hide her values – without tryng to please everyone. Yes, she was slow in some of her interviews, but that’s what makes her more real. She is like the most of us, careful, unlike polished politicians. Anyone who knows anything about the media knows it is very bias to the left. Of course it would try very hard to discredit her. I would bet that if she were a Democrat, she could be very slow in interviews, not answer questions correctly and would still be accepted.
And finally, calling someone names or insinuating they are old and bitter shows a lack of respect for the opinions of others and belittles you.
I don’t normally like to comment on political pieces and if I do it’s because the case maybe exceptional.
I’m am Canadian have been following your election for sometime. That being said, I do not agree with Westbrook on his views but I also don’t agree that because his views are so different from yours you would stoop to such levels of disrespect. I do admit that some of Obama’s actions are cause for concern and at times I might say he has even seemed somewhat arrogant. Form the beginning my first choice was “Hilary Clinton” while my husband could see no fault in “Mitt Romney”(I hope I spelled his name right). As time changed and I seen the last two, I believed the best person for the job was, Obama.” I would also like to point out, “Mr. Truth Shall Set You Free,” is that on many occasion Obama also failed to answer some simple questions.
Might I add that people dance around race far too often. If Mr.Westbrook does not agree with Obama a “black man” than he is racist, well since you do not approve of Sarah Palin or her presidential running mate does that mean you are a racist?
I know you are thinking that I’m a Canadian and should keep my mouth shut with matters that do not concern me, and you might be right; however, I also have the right to my opinion.
A very good thought provoking political piece, Westbrook. Well done.
I really hate those damn slashes! They never show up when you proof read!
